Windows short cuts without a Windows key?
« on: Thu, 20 August 2009, 08:50:20 »
I know there is a way to access these shortcuts without using the Windows key.  Example is Win key = open Start menu.  Ctrl+Esc = open start menu.

The two main ones I would like to know are the alternatives for Win+E = Windows Explorer   and Win+R = Run Window.

I used to know what they where but darned if I can remember them now.

Thanks

As a Win+E replacement, I've been using an Explorer shortcut with a hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+E) assigned to it... there's one floating around in the start menu anyway. As far as Run is concerned, I don't use it that often, but I think a shortcut with the required rundll32.exe call should fix that.

Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

■Ctrl + F4 - close the active document (in programs that allow multiple open documents)
■Ctrl + H - open the replace dialog box
■Ctrl + I - italic
■Ctrl + Left Arrow - move the insertion point to the beginning of the previous word
■Ctrl + N - open the current Web page in a new windows
■Ctrl + O - open the open dialog box

Use a program like KeyTweak to make Scroll Lock act like a Windows key.

Hmm,  looks like I will use the hotkey shortcut method.  Easy enough to remember.
Thanks everyone.

One of my most used non windows-key short cuts is control+shift+esc to open Task Manager since it saves you the trouble of having to ctrl alt del.

Ah, thanks for the reminder. I dunno why they changed Ctrl+Esc to open the start menu in the first place, in the olden days this opened the task manager.
