Hello GH, lurker turned member here!

Hello everyone, I just thought I'd introduce myself here, my name is Cory
I'm slowly phasing out the Razer setup and moving on to "real" keyboards. So far, I broke the "Razer code" and replaced my Razer Lycosa with a HHKB.
Always wanted one years ago, but could never justify the price, until one day, my Razer Lycosa decided to act up on me and I happen to come across this forum full of interesting keyboards with crazy cables.

I have a question for everyone. What is the actual difference between these colorful and color coordinating "quality" cables to your keyboards compared to the regular stock cable that came with the keyboard? I see a lot of people getting Mimic cables for the HHKB and other keyboards. Is there an actual performance advantage that defines the quality? Like does it respond faster or something? Or does the quality just means that these cables aesthetically look better and matches the keyboards and lasts longer because of the its custom woven design? Sorry for being a noob..

But hello everyone!

Sorry I typed a lot for the intro, apparently my new keyboard is too addicting to type on and I just can't stop typing.

Welcome! Those types of cable are mainly cosmetic, but provide some functionality also! With option of coiled cable you can get some flexibility for slack, and the nice paracord sleeving has a good feel and doesn't drag on things or get stuck easily. I doubt there's any difference in latency or things like that.

custom cables are just for aesthetics, build factors and any other reason you can think of aside from performance. hope you enjoy your stay

Welcome to Geekhack!

Most of the custom cables are hand-made to the highest quality, so they may well last longer than the mass-produced machine-made cables that come with the keyboards.  Plus some makers offer gold-plated connectors, which should last longer.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
