87th Oscars Live Journal Thread

Post updates and thoughts about the Oscars here.  I'm be adding my commentary as the events unfold.  Any photos or GIFs are appreciated.

First post.   Melanie Griffith looks like a walking, older Barbie doll.  Botox nightmare.

I win Ł100 if he does  :D

What's so bad about Washington state, Anna Faris?  Edmonds doesn't want you back, anyways.

Great interview her with token cultured British guy here.

Okay, why did Michael Strahan just show up?

In all seriousness, Robin Roberts is looking and feeling good after that cancer battle.

I'm not watching it, but this running commentary is ambiguous, but helpful :P

All red carpet show right now.  Reminds me of a high school social event with gaudy decorations, formal dress, everyone running around, acting excited, faking enthusiasm for wanting to be around each other.

Is there a man in the joint that is NOT wearing a black tuxedo?

J-Lo is still showing the same amount cleavage as she did 15 years ago.  Nice.

Black tuxedos everywhere, sounds exciting.

I'm pretty much only interested in Robert Duvall. I thought Birdman was crap.

Looks like Birdman or Boyhood are the front runners for Best Picture.  Hoping for an upset with The Theory of Everything.  The only movie I actually saw was Grand Budapest Hotel.

Come on, guys, turn on your TVs to ABC right now.  Need some support here.

Theory of Everything was really good. So was the Imitation Game.

It really isn't that inspiring this year.

Can't say the Oscars inspires me any year.  I just watch these Hollywood jack-off fests so I can provide commentary with a friend or two.

Where's Frostytoast?  Emma Stone was just interviewed.

Why is Adam Levine there?  Does being on The Voice warrant an Oscar invite?

Naimo Watts!  We share the same last name.  Except she's Australian.

Raindrops are falling now!  Good to hear it's raining in Cali, I here the reservoirs are low in those parts.

Literally no idea about any celebrity relationships. They really bore me. I have no idea why anybody cares about the relationships/weight/babies of these people.

Lady Gaga's dress took two months to make.  She better get a return on value for that thing.  She also will perform tonight.  Her husband is at home watching because he has to work tomorrow.  My friend says that she looks like she came from Alice in Wonderland.  Not really sure about my exact feelings on the dress, but I will admit that I like it and I will not be embarrassed if she was on my arm.  Say what you want about Lady Gaga, but whatever she does, it worked, at least for awhile.

Lots of white, beige, and generally lighter-colored dresses for the ladies this evening.  I wonder if they sent out a memo beforehand.  "Keep it light, ladies!"

The theater is starting to fill up.  Anticipation is building.

Cut to commercial.

Because their lives are so empty or boring or mundane, that they have to live through celebrity news.

Also, Yahoo keeps me updated with celebrity news every time I visit the Yahoo home page to check my inbox.

Patricia Arquette and one of the interviewers are discussing the seating arrangements right now.

And now back to Michael Strahan, the first NFL single season sack master to be an interviewer at the Oscars.

Farmer's Insurance guy gets the last interview before they switch to the main show.  I have peace of mind knowing that my viewing experience will have the security of Farmer's.

All the movie trailers are letting me know how far out of the loop I've fallen from the popular entertainment industry.  I have some work to do to keep up with the Joneses.

And the curtain has been raised!  Let's get this party started.  Great stage design, whoever did that should win an Oscar.  Barney from How I Met Your Mother has tonight's host.

Enjoyed the race joke there to start it off.  Now he's singing.  Not sure what's going.

Token British guy just got caught swigging from a flask.

Oprah!

How long until Clint Eastwood falls asleep?  Over/under send at 10:10 p.m. EST. Send wagers through PM.

Okay, Anna Kendrick is now singing on stage.  She has some pipes, I have to admit.

Jack Black?  When was his last good movie?  School of Rock?

I wish the celebrity's trolled the camera more when they do those quick closeup shots of the audience.

Dancing stormtroopers!

Which celebrities get the private boxes on the sides?

More Oprah!

I think half the appeal of Lupita Nyong'o is her name.

Katushkin, there's your boy Duvall!

Great to see Channing Tatum try to act with Mark Ruffalo.

Farmer's Insurance guy!

NNNoooooooooo :(

He was good in Oz... And my dad liked Whiplash, so I guess that's ok. I only lost Ł2 though I guess.

I feel like actors are the attention ****s from my high school, trying to be noticed for doing something artistic or meaningful.  Not to say I'm any better than them, because I'm just some miserable guy looking for attention on an Internet forum.

It's weird to see the 50 Shades of Grey actress actually wearing clothes.

Okay, now I know why Adam Levine is there.  Where's my earplugs?  I'm not really sure how Maroon 5 is commercially successful.  I really would prefer the band at the local jazz to play this song.  I'm gonna have to step away from this song for a moment.

J-Lo back on stage with that dress.  I'm sorry, but I can't look away from that cleavage.

Grand Budapest Hotel with the win in Best in Costume Design!  I actually did see that movie.  The costumes were impressive, no doubt.  Many thanks to Wes Anderson.

Jeff Goldblum sighting in a white suit!

Jack Black has never been good. Really. Tenacious D was at best a kind of joke band, but they were alright. I just find him a bit annoying.

They do separate awards for makeup and hair and then costume design?

And we're back from commercials!  Nicole Kidman also looking like a plastic doll.

Ida with win for Best Foreign Language Film!  My Polish grandmother would be proud.  Clint Eastwood can't understand a word from the Polish director.  Let this guy talk, turn off that farewell music.  Keep  going, bud, keep going!  Turn off that orchestra.  Imbeciles!

I would call those two different things.  One is dressing up people to enhance their true appearance, is the other is dressing up people to enhance their appearance.

Neil Patrick Harris interviewing seat fillers at the moment.  Emma Stone shot!

Token French actress Marion Cotillard on stage.

And Questlove didn't have anything better to do tonight expect made a cameo appearance.

Bad news for all those enjoying or despising my commentary on the 87th Academy Awards.  It's almost 9:30, I just realized that the Oscars is going to 11:30, and there is no chance in hell that I will be able to stay up that long.  So I'm signing out early.  Been good guys, see you at the next awards show.

Reading about them was a heck of a lot more interesting than actually watching them, that's for sure.  I never watch the Oscars, but when I actually did this year, I wondered why the heck so many people care about what dresses the women are wearing.  Why is this a newsworthy item?

I saw it on the web later. I otherwise usually stay up all night (between 3 to 6 am local time) to see it.

I found it to be mostly meh..  No special moment that is worth talking about.

think that mostly the right people won. Some acceptance speeches were good. Note how the Best Actor and Best Actress both had played people with neurological illnesses ... but didn't go "full retard".

Jack Black has never been good. Really. Tenacious D was at best a kind of joke band, but they were alright. I just find him a bit annoying.

I thought we were friends, katushkin.  :|   And of course Tenacious D was a joke band, that was the whole point.

I love The D.   ^-^

We are! :'(

Are the Oscars like The Grammys, in that no one cares about them until something you like wins one?

For the average person, it's just another thing to tune your TV to.  :|  There are people who obsessively follow celebrities' lives, and for them I'm sure it's just a magical time.  I don't really care one way or the other.

I know literally every word to TD and the POD! Also most of the words to their songs.  :'(
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done
