Need help making a decision
« on: Mon, 02 March 2015, 13:56:20 »
I have a serious problem with making decisions. I've been looking to buy a mechanical keyboard for like 4 months and have spent way too much time reading about them. I am now torn between cherry reds, blues, or maybe even a topre board. I really cant make a decision and was looking for some advice. I really like the look of the HHKB but the DAS, Ducky's and also the Corsair keyboards really interest me. Thank you for all of the help!

Well for starters, where are you located?  It's possible that there's a GHer (or a group of them) that will offer you the opportunity to try some boards out.  Some people like not leaving the home row to do most of their tasks in a 60% keyboard, but I've seen plenty of people buy a 60% for the looks and flip it after 15 minutes to a couple of days without really truly giving themselves a chance to adopt the new layout.

The new Das 4c tenkeyless uses Greetech switches, which as far as I know haven't really been reviewed/vouched for.  Duckys are pretty solid, and the Corsair RGB line has been plagued with firmware problems since the beginning, as well as their controversial discontuining of the MX blue variant of those boards.

No one can really decide for you; as you've probably seen on the forum, everyone has widely varying tastes in keyboard layouts and switches  :))

If you're in CONUS I have an MX switch tester I can loan out OP. PM me if you're interested.

The HHKB is like the dark side.
It's there always tempting you and eventually you will break and succumb to the power of the HHKB type s

Do you like the clicks?  Blues

Do you like not the clicks? Topre.  Just don't follow my lead right away and buy mx compatible stems so you can buy all the gmk gear.

I'm located in Georgia. I bought a 8 switch tester to try out the different switches and so far I like the blues the most. The corsairs actually interested me the most in the beginning but reading more and more about them has almost completely turened me off of them. I just like the look of them. The topre boards really intrigue me though. There are clearly a lot of people who do not like them but also a fair amount who love them. I'm completely open to trying the HHKB and switching to it. At this point I really just want to get away from this sidewinder. I feel like I will probably end up buying a Topre and a mechanical which will probably have reds. I play games fairly often and would use the mechanical for gaming and the topre for programming/typing. I'm just not sure if I would actualyl switch between boards as it seems kind of like a pain to have to do that haha. If I had more space I would leave the mechanical with the gaming rig and the Topre with my laptop.

Thank you for the offer but I actually bought one about a month ago because I finally got sick of just reading about the differences and wanted to actually feel them for myself. I really appreciate it though.

What do you mean about the MX compatible stems?
This is just more to throw into the mix to make the decision harder haha. I'm guessing that it allows keys from the MX boards to be put on a topre?

The type s is tempting but I don't know that I really need it. I also really like the look of the dark grey.

Yeah, it lets you use MX keycaps on a Topre board since they have different bottoms. there are very few topre sets you can actually get so if you get MX stems you open yourself to the possibility of getting pretty much any keycaps you want.

Do you just buy the board with the stems or do you have to buy the stems and install them yourself?

it's a mod you'll have to do yourself (or you can probably pay someone here to do it for you).

depends on the board

the novatouch lets you buy and put on MX caps, but a realforce/HHKB/type heaven needs a stem change

they're all good boards though, and the mod is pretty easy

i might not be the best person to tell you which to get, since my RF came with pink caps already on it

I think I'm going to go with a HHKB pro 2 but now am undecided between the type S and the non silenced. Is the Type S really worth it? I won't be normally using it around other people and I typically have headphones on. I think I'll also be buying a mechanical in the coming months also though.

Search around for a typing sound test between the two, there should be one on YouTube (mobile or I'd find it).

The sound difference is kinda large.
Filco Majestouch II (B) | Poker II (BR) | Cherry G80-11900 (BLK) | Das V3 (BR) | RS84 (soon...)

Granite | Skull Squadron | Deep Space | Raindrop R2 | Hyperfuse GMK (soon...)
