Hi from Sydney!
« on: Thu, 12 March 2015, 00:21:35 »
Hi everyone!

I'm Swimmingbird! I bought my first mechanical keyboard about a year ago (Ducky Shine III White Edition with MX Browns) and have been getting more and more into mechanical keyboards since then. I recently picked up a Ducky Mini (MX Reds) for cheap on auction that has stoked my interest in 60% boards and different switch types. My addiction is getting so bad I bought a Ducky Shine IV (again with browns) for work.

I've started experimenting with keycaps as well in the last few months starting with a set of white Vortex Backlit Doubleshot keycaps I got on Massdrop to just laying down more money than I care to admit on the GMK Hyperfuse set group buy. So far the Vortex ones make almost as big a difference as the mechanical switches themselves

Also been playing a bit with O-Rings - started with some red ones I picked up on eBay and some off brand (clear) ones I bought from China (through Ebay). I have just started using the clear o-rings on my work kb and am really satisfied so far!

I'm big into PC modding and have found that my modding mindset/addiction has gotten me into the wallet-burning territory of Mechanical Keyboards! I'm most interested in modding, groupbuys and exotic keycap sets, and am looking forward to learning a lot from the community.

Cheers!
Swimmingbird

Welcome to Geekhack!

My first modern mech was also a Ducky Shine - version 1 with MX blues and red backlighting.

Keycaps can make a huge different to a keyboard - different material, different thickness and different legends can make a keyboard seem like new.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

4 sets?

One set for each of your keyboards?

I'm probably going to use just two - possibly only one depending on how much I get used to it.

The other two are an investment I will probably sell 6 months to a year from now

I've got a box full of keycap sets.  I like the variety - I can swap and match (within certain constraints) as much as I like.
