Help with choosing the right keycaps
« on: Fri, 20 March 2015, 04:44:08 »
Hi ! Guys, I need your help for this : Knowing you're all really into customizing your keyboard and you all have awesome keyboards, i decided to do the same for mine, but i need your senpai knowledge for that, so here's the thing : I live in the UK, and a few months ago i got a Roccat Ryos MK PRO with brown switches, and it's perfect cause you can customize nearly everrything with the software of this keyboard ! Thing is, there are cheap ABS keycaps on it, they get oily reaaaaaally easily and it's uncomfortable to type or game on keycaps like that, really, it's nearly disgusting, i have to clean them with alcohol twice a week to keep them from getting that oily, and on the "S" and "D" keycaps, there's like the shape of my fingers starting to form, and these two keycaps are already shiny. Please, people, where can i get good keycaps for iso layout with a bit of color on it built with good quality and delivered in London ? I thought of those, but problem is, it's an ANSI layout : http://www.geekkeys.com/geekkeys-blue-grey-blank-thick-pbt-108-keyset-pre-order/

Oh and another question, i was thinking about getting Max Keyboard or WASD custom keycaps, but it's ABS, are they built in good quality or it's still the same sh*t ? ._.

Edit : my keyboard has a 6.5 spacebar

Non-standard bottom row = no keycap sets will fit completely. I don't know why the "gamer" brand companies continue to do this. Logitech G710+, Razer Blackwidow, Corsair K70 & K90, Roccat Ryos, etc, etc.

If you're buying a board with MX switches, swapping caps is a very attractive feature, since there are so many sets available that can fit. But not on one of these monstrosities.

Anyhow, ranting over. You can fit a set that has a WinKeyLess kit and a few extra bottom row 1x caps, but you're going to have to keep using the stock spacebar with them, so that really limits the colours / profiles you can use.

Here is a site with a few sets listed that you can browse to get an idea of what's out there: http://keypuller.com/

Read more here:

The ones on your Ryos are likely OEM profile, so most of the better quality sets won't quite match (Cherry profile, SA profile, etc), but if you don't mind the height of the spacebar being different to the rest of the caps, you can fit any of them.

If you don't like smooth caps, you may like PBT material caps (which have a different surface texture to ABS and are harder wearing), the best of which are thick and have dyesubbed legends like the Leopold sets available from widebasket on eBay. Be aware that caps can get expensive and it's addictive finding and buying new sets... refer to my sig...

Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I'mma check that ! Thank you so much for your reply, it was exactly what I needed !
I don't hink i'll be bothered by a spacebar that's a bit higher than the other keys, and yes, I think I'mma go for PBT ones, I mean i like smooth caps, but feeling the "oils" on it, it's just meh .-.  (i honnestly think it's because of the cheap keycaps quality though)

Oh and earlier, I found this video of a guy who managed to put a 6.25 spacebar in a layout that has a 6.5 spacebar (it's the corsair k70) :

Welcome to Geekhack!

Unfortunately if you have oily fingers (some people just do) then you will get oil on any keycap.

PBT will not wear down anywhere near as quickly as ABS though, so at least the keycaps should last longer, even if cleaning them regularly is required.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
