Apple Adjustable Keyboard Dying
« on: Mon, 06 April 2015, 17:13:06 »
Hello, I have an apple adjustable keyboard, and the qq and j keys are dying, with some double presses and some not registering.
Im not sure what to do.
Nothing was ever spilled, and it is very clean.
To show the problems, ill type 10 q and 10 j, alternating, like qjqj.

It’s likely that there’s some corrosion or contamination (dirt, etc.) on the electrical contacts for those keyswitches, causing the keys to get “chattery”. I’m not sure if the low profile Alps SKFS switches used in that keyboard can be easily disassembled while soldered down; if you have to desolder anything it’ll be a huge pain, disassembling and reassembling an Apple Adjustable keyboard is tricky and time consuming.

Anyhow, you might be able to fix it by blasting the switches with compressed air, or wiping the contacts with isopropyl alcohol or similar. Alternately, you could always desolder and swap those switches with a couple of switches from less important keys where the occasional missed or doubled keypress wouldn’t be a problem.

I could probably buy an extra num pad for cheap, and use thoes keys as spares.

Either way, seems difficult.
It seems dificult to dissasemble.

Ill take off the keycaps, see what i can see.

Yeah, I took a crappy condition one apart and put it back together a couple years ago (I don’t still have it), and it was quite tricky. It’s possible to do, but not easy.

Other alternate solution, get an ErgoPro:

You can replace with Matias switch.

You can replace with Matias switch.
This is false. As far as I know there aren’t any switches that serve as replacements for Alps SKFS.

Yeah, if i needed to replace the switch, i would just get another num pad from Apple Adjustable Keyboard and use it as spare switches
