Distance between Cherry stem and edge of keycap? Sanity check
« on: Thu, 09 April 2015, 17:57:39 »
So I'm trying to figure out if I'm reading this correctly. This is my first foray into building a custom keyboard and I want to make sure I'm doing this right.

What's this distance between the outer edge of the keycap and the outer edge of the Cherry stem? I tried to illustrate what I mean in this photo - http://i.imgur.com/brpF7U7.jpg

I imagine it depends on the keycap, right? So I looked at the datasheets for DCS (https://www.dropbox.com/s/rvralh0r62lyq77/DCSFamily.pdf) and DSA (https://www.dropbox.com/s/b2p3827zp6p282x/DSAFamily.pdf) and compared it to the Cherry MX datasheet. I came up with 0.0525" for DCS and 0.0575" for DSA.

Am I doing the math right?

You mean the difference between cherry housing and keycap right? Of course, depends on your keycap, some being larger than others. Let's assume 18mm though. I'll also presume you're doing this because you want to cut a plate? if so then the key is the distance between hole for switch and keycap edge.

Keycap width = 18mm
Hole width (the size I use for acrylic anyway) = 13.9mm

(18-13.9)/2 = 2.05mm

Obviously, adjust for your own cap width and hole size.

As it happens I 3D printed a plate today with that dimension at the side and it looks correct to me.
