Looking for another keyboard to add to my filco.
« on: Tue, 14 April 2015, 21:23:45 »
I'm looking at adding a second keyboard to my collection. I have a filco majestouch 2 TKL with browns and am looking for either another TKL or a 75%. What other keyboards are built as well as a filco? I just love how this thing feels in terms of sturdiness. I would like a detachable cable but I've also heard that the connections can come loose on the pcb. Is that an issue? There are just so many damn keyboards out there its hard to figure out what's what. You have all of these korean customs that keep getting new iterations and I have no clue what makes one better than another. I had initially wanted a WASD code when it came out but it was out of stock so I went with the filco instead. I don't necessarily care about leds given that I use blank keycaps anyway. What's out there that's really good right now? What's this 'new cherry mx' switch I've heard about? Not in terms of the razer crap - but 'new cherry mx blues' or something along those lines.

Any insight would be great! Thanks.

EDIT: Also - what about aluminum cases? Is it worth putting my filco in an aluminum case? Or any other board for that matter?

Bump

Also - can someone tell me a little about korean customs? are the Gon NS Nerd's any good? What makes one korean custom better than another if you like the layout? Like the lz 1 vs 2 or whatever it is if they basically look the exact same.

I'm new around here, so my opinion might not carry much weight, but I've read through this recent thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=70636.0 I think it's quite useful for new starters.

As you can see, topre shows up a lot in that thread, and from what I read on the forums so far it seems the Realforce 87u is the daily driver or the only keyboard for quite a few users (the 55g uniform seems to get a lot of love especially). You might want to try that next as an alternative TKL option.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: As for the sturdiness, you might be surprised but, contrary to the popular opinion, I don't find a Filcos to be very sturdy (especially not the full size ones, the TKL are always better though). It gives a sense of sturdiness when you type on it, yes, but when you pick up the whole case in your hand you can feel the plastic bending a bit around the plate. The sturdiest keyboard I've held in my hand is the Deck Hassium Pro, but that keyboard has its own problems. At least the one I got has some noticeable difference in switch weight between alphas and the numpad, and the shift keys feel somehow sticky (could probably be fixed by lubing the switches). The second sturdiest keyboard I've held was probably Ducky G2 Pro and after that a Filco. I have not held any full metal cases yet. In a smaller format, I think the Leopold FC660C is hard to beat in sturdiness out of the box.
