Well... lookey what we have here.

I was browsing through Google Images (Looking for "linux girl" to post as a retort to Ripster's "Geek Girl"), and one of the links led here...

Linkage

wow... some seriously rose-tinted glasses going on there. Either that, or some fat wallet-stuffing by M$.

Is it just me that is a bit shocked that someone that *seems* intelligent, can be so naive about Linux?

Talking about Debian on here
Quote
According to a Department of Defence study, the only way to fully eliminate it is to remove and physically destroy your computer’s hard disk.
WTF???Even if you want to use Microsoft products, then a Simple "FDISK /MBR" will sort that problem.

I really really hope that this is a (very very good) spoof site.

EDIT

On further reading, It *has* to be a spoof site. Either that or what little faith I had left in Humanity and Intelligence in the masses is about to plummet off a cliff.

I never had any real opinion as far as OSs go. As long as I have MS Office and a Java JRE package installed, I'll pretty much use anything. I could just as easily use OSX as I could Windows. That said, I really don't understand fanboyism for OSs in any form. I use Windows, but I don't care about Windows. If someone gave me a Mac to use at work tomorrow, I would be fine with that. I would like to use Linux more, but I don't have the software I need available for it. Oh well.

BTW, that site is an obvious spoof. Check the poll on the right (literally and figuratively).

I saw US politics, and I ignored it (Just as I do for most UK politics). I take it something is awry there?

Still, my little faith has not been totally crushed.

Although I like *nix, a lot, and use it as my Primary OS, I don't hate windows. For the Record, Windows7 is the best thing to come out of Redmond since DOS 6.22. I have a copy on Pre-Order (£28 after Discounts for Pro Retail... I can't argue at that, and Price has been my argument with past M$ Operating Systems).

Good good... I wasn't sure, as I have to deal with M$ fanboys a lot in work ("The one true OS" according to one of them, who sadly is more than competent to use other OS's if he would just bloody try one!), and some approach this level.

Hmmmm... I wonder what their reaction would be if I pointed them to that thread.

this is more obvious than the adequacy.org article talking about kids with an AMD processor and lunix being hackers

which i thought was real for a bit, admittedly, because it is written more convincingly than this article is.

Eh.  I look at it this way...  I've been professionally supporting Microsoft products for about thirteen years now.  I've made my career on supporting software that can never truly be fixed.

I've used Linux heavily at times, right now I'm being lazy and not doing so as much as I was.

Thank you Microsoft, for giving me a career!

In fact, unless I have a very compelling reason to use something which is open source, I'll go out of my way to find a closed source equivalent

Why? Even as a Linux user, I don't have major qualms about closed source, I'll use whatever is best. The fact that most of the software I use is open source probably says a lot though... But I wouldnt go out of my way for the sake of some philosophy, computers are for using, right?

oddly, I find linux easier to use then windows when it comes to installing software. I am far to lazy to have to search the web, download what I hope to be the correct file, click, click, click, click whatever....
In linux its apt-get install. ymmv of course but a centralized software repository is pretty neat.

This is pretty much it for me.  Until MS Office comes out on Linux, Linux is pretty much off the radar.  OSX would work for me, but unless we start using it at work, I am not buying the hardware to run it, and I am too lazy and don't have enough time (or care) to f*ck around with a Hackintosh.

This.

No pissing around with CD's/hard drives. No Serial Numbers, No Compatibility or dependency issues. Just apt-get install. Even my Self-Compiled Gentoo does this.

Custom Compiled. It doesn't work amazingly well, but dependancy checking is spot-on. Far better than manually trawling through myself. And as for portage... ugh.

sounds gnarly. I tried gentoo once,  but gave up after the second day. I am sure its nice and all, but the compiling was a bit much. I am way too lazy nowadays hence the nod to ubuntu.

while confusing to some, having a wide choice of distro's can be a positive thing. There really is a distribution with your name on it, you just have to find it.

THat's the beauty of Gentoo... what you want (No matter how weird), and only that.

I have meant to look into arch, but haven't got round to it. May need to find some time to have a play.

Yep, but.. UGH!

I dunno, it is, as you say, easy. I just didn't like it. It does do dependancy checking, but it failed on a few (Admittedly, I was installing rafts of stuff after a fresh install). It swore blind that I had the required GTK+, but the Software Insisted I didn't. The software was right. apt-get just does what it says.

use flags are certainly interesting...you've got to have a base and several you bring in and out depending on what you're "installing" otherwise things go whacko and you end up pulling half the repository lol
