Packing and shipping will resume tonight. Over the weekend my wife had to pull 4 new-ish born birds from their parents nest. Birds have a tendency to hold amounts of yeast in their crop. Unchecked all of these babies would have died, but she was able to flush the yeast out of their system which they wouldn't have been able to do on their own. We were successful with all but one of the babies.
Danger with yeast in young birds is that it begins to turn their food into dough. The dough is too viscous to be digested and so their parents continue to feed them and the dough expands in their crop. We pulled them after finding their youngest almost unable to breath and buried. Parents will bury young which they are sure won't make it/have visible defects/do not respond to feeding calls. This means that the yeast only started to propagate shorty after the youngest was hatched. It was the 3rd oldest that didn't make it. The oldest bird in the bunch was 7 days old and so hand feeding was administered for treatment every 2 hours.
Needless to say this house hasn't gotten much rest. Love you guys.
