height comparision of TKL keyboards
« on: Tue, 09 June 2015, 05:54:49 »
Hello Guys,

can anyone point me to or measure the height *) of the front, middle and last row on the following keyboards?

-Ducky Shine 3 TKL
-Filco Filco Majestouch 2 tenkeyless
-CM Storm QuickFire Rapid I

I have been more or less unsucessfull in digging out this kind of information. Currently i own a relatively flat Func KB-460, which i initially bought to try out mechanical keyboards. I love the mechanical feel but if possible i don't want to go any heigher with a TKL replacement.

thanks in advance,
Maxxon

Most mechanical keyboards have a fairly standard case thickness - that is needed so the switches will fit in.

Thus the overall height (desk to top of keycap) will depend largely on which type of keycaps are installed.

DSA will be the lowest, then something like Cherry profile, then OEM profile, and finally sculpted SA profile keycaps would be the highest.

Which set were you thinking of measuring?

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Hello,

thanks for your response. I am just looking for the most thin keyboard possible (to use it as a base to customize it later with probably some PBT caps), as i did not think of the different keycaps i thought it would be enought to just measure with the stock caps they come with (that would be OEM profile, right?). But thanks to your response i think it makes most sense to just measure *without* any keycaps.

I will measure because this thread made me lol.

My QFR-I is in a box, but I'm pretty sure the Novatouch has the same case. My keycaps are in Cherry profile which is lower than the OEM stock keycaps.

I only bought the QFR-I because it was on sale and you can't find QuickFire Stealth in Eurostan. You will probably get really tired of the obnoxious leds and the white backplate. I would much rather have QFS. Not to mention it's easier to customize without switch leds.

EDIT:

I think the Filco case has the same dimensions as QFR's, as they both originate from Costar.

Ducky Shine 3 Yellow Edition with legs folded in and extended.

Sorry but it has Filco OEM keycaps on it.  And also a custom Esc, but that is about the same height as the other keycaps.

Quickfire TK (legs flat)

Varmilo VA87MR (legs flat)

The Varmilo has to be one of the if not shortest mechanical keyboard I have owned.
It looks like it is currently on sale on Massdrop: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/varmilo-va87mr
