Model M Acting Up
« on: Wed, 24 June 2015, 12:28:31 »
I've had a bot-modded Model M, #1391401, for a little over a year now. About a week ago it started registering the keypress "n" as "nm." All the other keypresses continue to register correctly. Anyone know of a way to fix this problem short of replacing the membrane? And if I do need to replace the membrane, is Unicomp the place to get a new one, or is there somewhere else I should look?

Thanks so much!

The first thing to do is to clean it. Who knows what kind of stuff has built up.

If this doesn't work. The membrane is the likely cause since it is registering two keys at once. Is there any damage? Crud on it?

Thanks, Matt!

I cleaned the outer layers of the keyboard but not the layers held together by bolts; guess I'll undo the bolts, clean what needs cleaning, and see what sort of shape the membrane is in. Any words of advice if it does end up having to be replaced?

If the membrane is damaged then its likely trace repair. Linustechtips reviewed this(https://goo.gl/YPpXaZ) trace repair pen that should do the trick. Before you go looking for damaged traces see how the bolt mod is doing. A mistake during the bolt mod process could be the cause. Normally your problem can come from losing too many plastic rivets and the innards become loose enough to start a issue. I assumed this wasn't the culprit since yours is bolt modded but there could be a mistake in the bolt mod process that started causing a problem now.

btw the whole membrane doesn't normally need to be replaced unless there is major damage like a cut.
