shallow front edge, filco vs cherry
« on: Fri, 02 October 2009, 23:14:31 »
So, I'm trying to replace my das III. I'm currently debating between the cherry g80-3000 and the filco majestouch. Before I switched to using mechanical switch keyboards instead of BS, I came from using a unicomp 101 and one thing that annoyed me with the das III is the high lip on the front of the keyboard, it's also on a real sharp angle and it irritates my hands.

I liked the sort of extended-front that tapers downward on the old IBMs and unicomps, not quite a wrist-rest but just a slight taper down. I am typing on a compaq mx11800 and it similarly has a slight lip on the front of it which really softens the feel of the edge. I'm wondering if anyone who has experience with either the filco majestouch or the g80-3000 keyboard can confirm which has a lower edge on the front, it seems like the cherry is more my style but it's hard to tell from the pics alone. for reference my das III is about 1.8cm high on the front and the mx11800 i'm using now is 1.1cm, the unicomp was about 1.3cm but it's rounded so it feels nice and smooth.

heh oops, you're right I meant cm. edited for clarity :P Bah. 6mm sounds like the way I was measuring (I lifted the keyboard up and measured it across the front as best as I could). which keyboard are you referring to though?

ahh, I was referring to the vertical height of the front lip actually, although not from off the desk. Having a really short lip horizontally might solve the same issue though. For some reason, it seems the one on the das has a tendency to jam into my wrist a lot. I see you actually reviewed the das and the filco, i'm sort of curious if you noticed the same thing. I don't use a wrist rest or anything but if I have my hands on my desk the sharp angle really digs in.

edit: just took some more measurements, the mx11800 is about 1.5cm off the desk, das is almost 2cm off the desk, thats with feet retracted. I don't usually put them down but the sharp right angle on it makes it annoying either way.

I do have it on my desk actually, although I don't have any problems with that normally, most keyboards have a curved or slanted edge on the front so it's not so bad, just the das drives me nuts, i guess that little extra bit of height is just enough to make a difference. practically half a centimeter higher than all the other keyboards I have which is somewhat significant to me...I mean, I guess they have to have room for the cherry switches under it, but still, no taper/curve or nothing...just a harsh right angle. I'm not too sure how I feel about installing a tray though, only because my legs are pretty close to the desk in the first place, I have a feeling i'd be bumping my legs a lot. I find that playing my various instruments often causes me more wrist pain than any typing and I'm usually typing all day, often on a rubberdome at work (ugh)...

The G80-3000 has a similar profile to the Compaq board. It tapers down to roughly 1cm, or 1.5cm from the desk surface.

soo, after looking at some more pictures and doing some more research, I bit the bullet and ordered the black g80-3000 from DataCal with the brown switches. It seems more my style, larger keyboard with the tapered front. I never really liked how streamlined my das was. I sort of wanted to buy the one with blue switches too but it sounds like everyone's out of stock at the moment. It's okay though, I think this compaq 11800 has got me hooked on the browns for now. I do still like the clickyness of the blues. I'll definitely be trying to get my hands on one eventually.

I probably could try to get one backordered from DataCal or any of the other places who have them listed on their site (geminicomputers, totalbarcode, posglobal, etc), but after reading a few threads on here, it sounds like everyone's estimating December for them to arrive. I might try to give them a call next week.

I remember hunting for a g80-3000 before I got my Das III and had the most horrific luck in finding one, and settled for the Das instead...I wish I'd found this forum back then! They'd probably have still been in stock then......

You are absolutely going to love the G80-3000 with browns.  I like the front lip on the Cherry, too.  For me, it helps space my hands away from the keyboard at a distance I find comfortable.  I think the lack of a front lip on the Filco jacks up my hand position and impacts my accuracy and speed.

So, it came today! This is pretty much one of the first things I've typed with it in fact. I've noticed it seems a little easier to accidentally activate the keys than on my mx11800 but I have a feeling it's because that keyboard was old, used and dirty. I definitely like the format/feel of this keyboard a lot. I still want one with blue cherries as well, even more so now that I know I like cherry's g80-3000 size/feel, I'm going to be on the hunt for that next. If I do end up with a blue one as well, I think I might take the brown and use it at work so as not to annoy everyone around me. I was surprised how light the keyboard is, I guess because it has no plate. I'm not used to that although I can't really tell a difference either way when it's sitting on my desk

oh and back to the original purpose of this thread, the front edge on it is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I really like tapered front. I have not had the problem I have on my das at all with this board. I thought I might not like the curved J/F keys on the cherry rather than the dimpled ones but so far that hasn't bothered me either and i'm able to find those keys just as easily as before.

use a wrist rest, it gets your hands over the edge
