Cherry G81-3011SBU - The Ultimate Olivetti
« on: Mon, 13 July 2015, 17:14:32 »
Without a doubt my greatest single find to date.. An Olivetti keyboard with original Cherry dyesubs in ANSI layout. None of that doubleshot rubbish! Also, these are genuine Cherry dyesubs, not those weird ones found on some Olivettis. Fully MX compatible!

This is the first of its kind I've seen. I've seen one other set like this belonging to QINQIN, but that set seems to be a frankenset going by the 2" key and some of the numpad keys which seem to be Spanish.

You'll notice in one of the pics it says G81-3011SBC.. No idea why that's the case!

Anyway, without further ado here are the pictures :

Yeah, it came with these really awful MY variants :

In the pics I put a Leeku PCB inside, since that particular MY variant requires that you almost break the keycaps in order to remove them..

Don't forget to document the switches and the dates on the board or you'll get yelled at in PMs.

And is that bottom row A profile?  The top row looks like E profile, but that bottom row looks like A profile.  Sexy caps and the board looks like it's in fantastic shape.

Well, this is the only board of this known to exist. This is easily worth >1k, definitely more, and I see where Photek doesn't want to use it, as he has said before he isn't that big of a fan of Olivetti.

Awesome Photos!

I'm really glad it went to a good home  :D

For those interested in the backstory: I put an advert in a local newsletter in rural Western Australia ~10 years ago asking if anyone had any old computers that they were chucking out (because I wanted to learn more about PC hardware at the time), and this was in one of the bundles of gear that I ended up picking up from a local farm. I posted a couple of pictures online, and Photekq timed emailing me with an offer perfectly, just before I headed back to Aus to visit family.

Australia may be a place to watch for more ANSI Olivetti gear, apparently they were successful enough to have contracts with some of the banks and government departments.

All TA boards and Olivetti boards are like this.

There seems to be some connection between the two, as they are both '3011' : http://imgur.com/a/csnSR

So 3000 is Cherry and 3011 is OEM (TA, Olivetti, NCR, etc.)?

Nah, usually each variant will have a different code. Dark grey NCR is 3077, light grey is 3007, peacock is 3004, etc. But for some reason Olivetti and TA share the same code - 3011.

Yeah, messed up the NCR bit. The reasons seems to be that Olivetti absorbed Triumph-Adler in '86, so they were one company and only got one model number from Cherry :p

I found one Olivetti in Australia.. ONE,  They must be out there..   I have also seen a few Cherry G81-3000 boards, too.

When I went to school, Wyse terminal boards and Model M's were very common.
