[SOLD] Model F AT
« on: Sat, 18 July 2015, 09:35:59 »
SOLD

For Sale - a restored and modified IBM Model F AT.  Asking $200 total shipped CONUS.  This was easily the most intensive restoration project I've ever completed.  The keyboard was in very bad condition when I received it.  I had to deal with broken ears, dead insects, disintegrated foam, a top plate with visible corrosion, and general stickiness everywhere.  As always, I'm open to questions regardless of intent to buy. :)

Features:
  • Completely disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled.
  • Caps are original except for the ones used to create a more ANSI-like layout.  Leftover original caps not used will be included.
  • Installed xwhatsit controller for USB connectivity and full programmability.  By request I will program whatever layout you want - otherwise the layout will be as shown by the keycap legends.
  • Top plate sanded and painted black with clear coat finish.
  • Foam layer replaced with hand punched 2mm art foam.

Dayum, that's one beautiful board. Wish I had a spare $200
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Thanks guys!

Bump with a potato pic of what it used to look like.  I should've taken more pictures of the internals but the last thing on my mind during the restoration process was documenting it.

Go for this.  The feel of the F far exceeds the feel of any M.  I love mine.

Are you willing to negotiate the price at all? or are you firm?

You would be hard-pressed to find a comparable AT. The xwhatsit controller alone is $35, then you have to wire it up!

The keys are a $15 order from Unicomp or clickykeyboards.

SSKs are far more common.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

This is a steal, I paid $150 for one without a controller or being restored. Had I known this kind of deal was coming I would have waited.

I'm more open to offers if you have a long history at GH, great Heatware feedback, or I've met you in real life.  With this particular project I sunk a lot of time into it so it will be difficult to talk me down too much.  Feel free to PM me and try though.

As always, I'm also happy to instruct/advise anyone who wants to do their own restoration.  It's quite time consuming but you can definitely restore your own AT for less than what I'm charging assuming you already have the necessary tools/materials lying around (and your AT doesn't have broken parts).  Even if you don't end up saving money you might find it a very rewarding experience!  Also, there are some great guides on GH about restoring Model Fs from great members (some of whom have already posted in this thread).

Sold.  I received a lot of interest for this board and I'm too lazy to reply to all the PMs so I'm just going to post it here :P
