Tiny LED question
« on: Thu, 23 July 2015, 19:58:57 »
Looking for anyone with experience working with these LEDs.  I found a strip of them and was wondering if and how I could use them on a PCB.  They seem like they are almost too small to work with.  Any certain spots these can be used?  Any ideas?  Thanks guys  :)

And sorry for the potato pic in advance.

SMD LEDs are typically used to create the "underglow" effect seen on certain Korean customs (most notably GON). You mount them sideways so the light shines outward. Ofc the PCB has to have pads that support it..

Looks like the ones that GON uses: http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/electric-parts/14-ledssmd-50-pcs.html

Some PCBs have dedicated pads for these for underglow effects, like GONs. Or you can hack together an underglow effect on the bottom side of the switch LEDs as suggested here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=70188.0 . I used that technique on one of my own boards and it worked great! https://imgur.com/a/VtgnU . Sourced the SMD LEDs from here though: http://m.ebay.com/itm/301403891084
