Unicomp Model M: something strange just happened

I was typing along, and suddenly the period/full stop key went completely linear: no click of any kind. Yet the key still registered perfectly.

I hammered on it repeatedly (maybe 100 times or so, and it is suddenly working properly.

Anyone ever had that happen? I'm glad it's back to normal as I don't have a proper keypuller. I really need to get one of the wire-type ones. And I really don't know much about the care and feeding of a bucking spring switch, so opening it probably would have made the situation worse.

I wonder what happened, since typing both caused and corrected the problem? I was close to emailing Unicomp when it fixed itself.

Every once in a while, especially when pulling caps, a spring will become improperly seated so that it doesn't buckle. Usually it's enough to pop the cap off and put it back on.
