Massdrop lurking paid off! Topre Realforce 87U 55g
« on: Sun, 26 July 2015, 06:28:09 »
So just to give a little backstory on why I feel like I've won the ****ing lottery. I had just bought the Ducky 108 PBT keycap set in green/cream off of Massdrop, and I had it shipped to my best friend who now lives in New York. I am here in the Philippines, so shipping isn't exactly the best. A few days later, the Topre Realforce 87U 55g black/black keyboard goes up and I go crazy. I'd really have to save up if I wanted this board, but this was my endgame board.

Now, my friend is coming home on August 26, and I'm checking the RF drop and it says that a limited amount will be shipped on August 14, so it's all well and good. As I try to purchase, I see that the option for the first batch is greyed out and the only option available is End of August or Early September delivery, which would be too late for my friend to bring it from NY. This saddened me greatly, but he said he had another friend who was willing to bring it, although it would be on October. Another 2 months of waiting. I still ended up buying it.

Here's where the story gets interesting. Each day, I would check the drop maybe 3-4 times and see if someone dropped out and see if the first batch delivery option would be available again. I knew it would be a long shot and that I would probably get disappointed, but I said to hell with it and did it anyway. Lo and behold, after around 10 days of checking like a madman, from 44th in the drop to 32nd, I finally got the option for the first batch. You have no idea of the rush I felt when I saw that 33rd to 32nd person in the drop and clicking on the first batch delivery changing from grey to black as the option became available. I feel like a ****ing king! Now I can get my Realforce Topre 87U 55g keyboard before August ends when my best friend comes home.

Be one with the cup rubber! Rejoice, my friends, for all is well and right with the world. Good day!

Great story!
I know how it feels when you finally get something you've been dreaming of , had some similar stories with a few of my keyboards :D

Congrats!

man, what a great story! Congratulations. I bought mine from Bro Caps when he had a sale and it was slightly cheaper than what's on sale in EK, so I was elated then. I'm still enjoying the 55g and I am sure you will like yours too! Did you buy the black or the white one?

@Meiosis -- thanks, dude!
@jokrik -- It feels great! We all love these keyboards, and it's even a bit better now that it has a bit of a story behind it. Cheers!
@jerue -- I hope so! It's my first foray into Topre. I'm 99% certain I'm going to enjoy it!
@Belfong -- I am really banking on that! The one on Massdrop was black/black, but it always looked like a dark grey to me. Not sure if I would have chosen the white one. Nonetheless, still grateful because it comes with 4 PBT spacebars! Talk about a good deal!

i wish massdrop sold the 45g EK version, which is the one i want.
getting a 87U from elitekeyboards would cost me about $350, while the one on massdrop would only cost me $225.

i've imported a keyboard from outside of the EU before, but i don't think i can do it again. it's just so harshly expensive.

grats on your purchase though, real sweet deal there!

Thanks, man! I was really lucky in this drop too. Sucks to hear about the cost to import a keyboard to where you're from. Maybe Massdrop can cater to the 45g version soon. But maybe you might be interested, they have the Novatouch Barebones (no keycaps) on Massdrop right now for $135.00, which could be a pretty good deal for some. :)

Why this big of a difference?

Wow, I check Massdrop almost daily and I somehow missed this drop until I saw this thread. Thanks for the heads up, been waiting for a good Topre board to drop for awhile!  :thumb:

the difference is actually smaller than i thought, because i thought massdrop was EU-based.

still, the difference would be about $60.
import charges go up as the value(item+shipping) goes up. and because the shipping cost from EK is higher, the import charges go up a bit as well.
i guess +$60 isn't terrible, but i wouldn't say it's not significant.

Seriously...the last 2 drops I've been in either have an incredibly long lead time, or the manufacturer messed up the order *ahem CM *ahem

At least with the PBT Spacebars there shouldn't be any delays. Even with matt3o's very, very high QA  ;)

@njbair -- I hope so too. But if ever it doesn't work out, I guess I can always wait until October. Let's hope it doesn't reach that point though.
@ShardZer0 -- No problem! Come join the party. Drop ends in 4 days, I think.  :D
@Bucake -- I know how that feels. The customs tax here in the PH is insane too. Estimate of about 30% of the total cost of the board + shipping, which is what I want to avoid.
@jerue -- What were your last two drops? How long was the delay? I'm crossing my fingers here!

Congratulations mikes41720! Considering that they are bundling four PBT spacebars with the keyboard, the price is quite reasonable. By the way, if you can, then do consider shipping the red esc key as well to your friend. That will be the proverbial cherry on top.

Thanks, rf87! Yeah, I heard the set of the PBT spacebars are $30.00 so it's pretty reasonable. I don't think I'd like the feel of everything being PBT except the spacebar, especially with how frequent we press on the spacebar. Elitekeyboards says the red ESC key will be on sale again on August, I'll have to see if I can make it by then!

Drops ship all over the place - some I've joined have shipped very soon after finishing, some are still going even after others I joined later have already shipped.

Good luck - I hope it does ship early for you.  But if not, at least you have a fall-back plan :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It's actually not all that bad on the RFs (I've had like 5 of them). I usually put some cellophane tape on them to keep them from shining up, but this PBT spacebar is just too good to pass up.

#6 on it's way!

@rf87 -- I'll try to see how different the spacebars really are. It's like the mindset is that ABS is utter garbage, when it's not. But PBT master race!
@daerid -- You've been through 5 RF boards already? What happened to them? Did you reach the 30 million keystroke mark? And which did you prefer, the 45g or 55g version?  ;D

I find the ABS spacebar to be all right. But just like you, I can't seem to shake off that nagging thought in the brain about the spacebar not being PBT. I hope that the PBT one will be sufficiently textured so as to be distinguishable by touch.
