New TKL keyboard for gaming FPS/typing - seeking advice
« on: Tue, 11 August 2015, 04:24:27 »
Hi there.

I own two keyboards: CM Storm Quickfire XT MX Blue and Filco Majestouch Ninja 2 TKL MX Blue. From those two I love Filco for TKL size and overall built quality (I hate the CM Storm XT rubber coating) but IMO for some reason Cherry MX Blue switches feels better in Quickfire XT.

Since full size of XT is driving me nuts, I am looking for a new TKL keyboard for gaming FPS/typing.

MX Blues are a bit too light for my taste and therefore if I was limited to Cherry switches keyboards, I would look for MX Black keyboards. However, I am very curious about the feeling of Matias switches.

I would prefer the keyboard to have a detachable cable if possible.

Could you please recommend some of the possible good choices for me? Is this a good idea to go for Matias switches if gaming FPS is going to be a part of what I will use the keyboard for?

Have you tried Greens?

get yourself a switch tester and try some out is probably your best bet. might end up with clears or something like that.

I did, they require more force to actuate but they feel plasticky, that's why I am thinking of MX Blacks or Matias switches.

What games?  I swap to my linear MX boards when I'm gaming, and I think Ghost blacks or stock blacks are the best overall.

Best layout is "mini" aka 75% aka 84-key.

CSGO mostly, if not only. Blacks sounds fine for me. I also heard a lot of Gateron Blacks, too bad there is no a single keyboard with them being sold around.

If I recall, gateron blacks are lighter than MX blacks.  I hear great things about how smooth they are, but they are new and have not been tested for durability.

i modded one of my QFS to lubed MX black and am happy with the quality, many days I prefer it over the expensive korean boards I own.

Linear is perfect for CS:GO

Since you have two blue boards, you could consider modding your own (the advantage being that you can lube the switches, or use custom springs

For clicky emulated switches I much prefer ALPS over MX, but do not like them for FPS gaming. On top of that, it is near impossible to find a good TKL with 6kro that supports ALPS

That is one of the keyboards I consider. The real question for me seems to be whether I should go for Cherry MX switches or maybe look for Gateron clones that are often described as better. I really want to avoid getting a poor quality cherry switches if that is the case with recent batches.

My recommendation would be to wait for the next batch of KBP V80MTS to be released and get one with Matias Click switches. They should be available in about 2 months.

Disclaimer: I have never tried Matias Click switches but I have tried Quiet Click, QL, and several varieties of Alps clicky switches. It seems like it would be a good option for you, though.

Clicks generally are not the best for FPS gaming, though I would agree ALPS and ALPS clones are superior to MX.
