Varmilo VB87M Bluetooth
« on: Wed, 12 August 2015, 13:57:26 »
Hi Geekhack,

I am looking for this keyboard, the Varmilo VB87M Bluetooth, it was sold through Massdrop but I was too late. Are there certain webshops that still sell this keyboard, I can't find any links on google.

I don't know if this is the right sub-board, please let me know if I broke a rule.

Thank you in advance!

Looks like it's back up on Massdrop for another week if you still haven't got one. FWIW, I have this board with Gateron blues and absolutely love it.

I don't notice any latency. It feels the same as my wired board (CM QuickFire Stealth).

I've had my VB87M for 2 months now. I have not noticed any latency/connectivity issues with the bluetooth I use this adapter:

And for anyone with questions concerning an aluminum case and connectivity problems, there are none. I also have the aluminum case on my VB87M and I can still use it >10ft away from my tower.

Does it work both wired and bluetooth or exclusively bluetooth?

Exclusively bluetooth. Wired is only for charging. I'm a Mac user, and I only have one problem with this board. Basically, for some reason it doesn't show up natively for configuration as a keyboard. This has two detrimental effects:

  • You cannot use the keyboard until you're logged in. This is particularly bothersome for me because I keep my laptop closed and have it plugged into an external monitor... so every time it loses bluetooth connection with the keyboard and wakes from sleep, I have to open the computer and use the onboard keyboard (or hook another one up) to enter my password. Note that this *only* seems to happen if it loses the bluetooth connection. If I leave the keyboard on and my computer's just sitting there for like 24 hours I can still jump right back in and enter my password with the keyboard
  • There is no native support for modifier key switching. This is fairly common, because the keys adjacent to the spacebar are typically mapped to Command, but most mechanical keyboards I've used have this as another key (I think Option). This means you need 3rd party software (Karabiner) in order to switch the modifiers.

Neither of these are deal-breakers to me, and I like this board a lot more than my wired, USB one.

So I've been using this every day for just under a month. I charged it for maybe 2 minutes when I first got it and the battery is *just now* running out. I will say that when the battery gets very low it starts to both miss and duplicate keystrokes, but plugging it in for a few minutes has relieved the issue.

Looks like I was mistaken about the battery issue. The 't' key on this keyboard is no longer functioning correctly. Sometimes it will not register a 't' at all, other times it will register two 't's. Very frustrating that it's starting to act up after less than a month!

After reading so many stories about keyboards with premature failure on massdrop, I'm already in my head calling that place 'crapdrop'.

I can't believe the QC on the keyboards is this bad across all brands.

To Massdrop's credit, it did work perfectly for a whole month. Their customer support has definitely improved because they got back to me within an hour and are already working on a replacement.

I spoke too soon! It was all set to be sent back, but the guy has not sent me the shipping label and he's not responding at all anymore.

That happens--it's near the holidays so people have been taking off this Friday.

I wonder how long the battery charge last?
