What layout does your laptop use?
« on: Sat, 15 August 2015, 04:07:36 »
I actually really like my laptop keyboard. It's a 70% layout, and the key, while membrane, are incredibly tactile and nice feeling. (It's a decently old dell studio XPS 13" with a dual core processor...) It's definitely the most comfortable keyboard I've used on a laptop. Better than any other membrane board I've used, even when compared to the new mac keyboards, or their old ones. (still not as nice as some good mech boards though.)

But hey, I still get over 2 hours of battery life, and that's more than my previous laptop, which could barely make it past the hour mark. (it was a 17" modern gaming laptop...)

I've got a 17" laptop I bought about 6 years ago that has full size ISO layout. I can't really imagine using a laptop that wasn't full sized, it's weird, but I understand that its unusual to have a full sized keyboard on a laptop.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Samsung Netbook: 60% + arrows and function keys, like Mac.... but JIS layout with Nordic legends for some reason. Bought it in a hurry and it had the best feel among the netbooks in the shop.

Sure, this keyboard has a compact size. The regular keys are only a little bit less wide than normal.
The vertical Return key is almost regular-sized. 1u wide at bottom, 1.25 wide at top. Instead the keys in the two rightmost columns next to the vertical Return key are 2/3 size - but those keys are much less used.
Good design choice! This arrangement than is so much better than having a ridiculously small ISO Return key like on Apple Mac and MS Surface. (BTW. Even Apple's full-sized desktop keyboard is like that, and that is unforgivable!)

Work Thinkpad. A modern Thinkpad with chiclet keys. Key feel is OK and no key is too small. The only design miss is that modern Thinkpads don't have a 6-key cluster above the Backspace key like the old ones did.
The key in the lower left corner is Fn, and the Alt Gr is one step to the left from normal, but that is how it has almost  always been on Thinkpads and more a question of habit. The key between Alt Gr and right Control is Print Screen - which is really unnecessary.
The keys to the left and right of Arrow Up are now Page Up and Page Down instead of the old keyboard's Page Left/Page Right that did not have any use in any program that I know of.

Wait... Some keyboards had a page left and page right button? That's amazing... It would actually be pretty nice to have on this keyboard, since the screen is low res, and sometimes websites are too wide for the screen, so I have to scroll around. Oh, and I didn't mention, the touch pad doesn't have two finger scroll, since I re installed windows, so I have to use arrow keys and the page up/down to navigate easily.

My only laptop is an ancient Dell Mini 9 netbook, the keyboard is physically nearly ANSI but has ISO-UK keys with only a couple of them in random places - it's tiny and has very short key travel but I can peck-type pretty quickly and accurately.  If you're wondering F11 and F12 are on Z and X, don't ask me why not ' and Return, or why no labels, that's just how it is

Thinkpad t420 here, takes some getting used to, but the enlarged esc and del keys are quite nice after a while. (can swap fn and l ctrl in bios)

they're well made scissor-switch boards, but it's hard to compete with full-size mechanical switches. It can get annoying transitioning from half a day on a buckling spring or a mx green board and using the thinkpad for the rest of the day.

I've got an old Dell XPS 1330 that I used to use for school that I now use for day to day online stuff, it has a 75% layout pretty much. I have a an Alienware M18x R2 that I've put a lot into for the sake of keeping it up to date and modding.  A 100% ANSI layout, pretty much. Some of the keys had to be repositioned to get it all to fit in the layout of the palmrest, but yeah. I never use its native keyboard though. It's pretty much a DTR that sits away from me. My setup is kind of strange. http://imgur.com/a/N4Ygg

My thinkpad X200T has a horribly worn UK ISO keyboard (OEM Chicony), but I don't use it much and usually plug in a TypeMatrix 2030 (and either place it on the built-in keyboard, or on a tray or my lap, when I have the screen rotated).

I don't know your setup, but maybe consider a Mini Dock Series 3?... They have ps/2 ports, and are quite affordable now, at least on ebay... So you could place your Thinkpad on the dock, and run your kb perhaps more comfortably on your desk and run it through the dock?

I keep putting off getting one, but at around $40usd, it's a nice option, plus dual monitor support (if you do dvi/displayport)...

just sayin :D

Eh? I don't see your point. I actually doubt you've *read* my post.

Mini Dock Series 3 isn't compatible with X200T, only X220 and some huge beasts. I don't plan to downgrade to a 16:9 screen, unless it's absolutely inevitable. I do have a dock for the X200/X201[T], but never use it, because it (1) certainly doesn't help cooling on hot summer days and (2) gets in the way of a large battery in some cases.

Moreover, it's a convertible tablet and I like to use it with the screen rotated to have it closer to my face. The dock kinda gets in the way then. It doesn't even make sense to use it, considering that I usually unplug the keyboard and carry it with the laptop (and only then use it on top of the internal keyboard).

My HP Pavilion dv6has a slightly squished full layout. I like it a lot, honestly.

MacBook Pro:

Mine is the "classic" unibody so it has the superior-feeling full scissor switch, as opposed to the short-travel one found in the current models with the Retina Display. I really like the layout. My only real complaint is that if you install Windows through Boot Camp, the command key gets mapped to Windows, and there's only one control key. It's not so much a problem for me now as I no longer run Windows on my Mac, but it was certainly annoying when I did.

I got an m4800, very close to tx1800 layout. To bad the keys feel like they are stuck on with gum that was rolled in some sand, course, sand.
