Sip Sockets
« on: Wed, 02 September 2015, 09:54:20 »
Hello!

I just recently installed some sip sockets on my rather new keyboard and inserted some 2x3x4mm rectangular LEDs into them.
After I put the keycaps on I noticed that the feel of the keyswitch had changed. The PBT of the Cherry Dyesubs seems to be touching the LED which
makes the key feel really mushy.

Now I am wondering if there is any way to go about this and if GMK ABS would work better than the PBTs that I have now.
Have anybody ever experienced something like this?

It may be that you didn't get the SIP Sockets seated fully while soldering. That can happen if you solder them in without having LEDs in them first to keep them pressed against the bottom of the switch. You can also check that your switch tops are fully closed and that the SIPs are not catching on them preventing them from closing fully.

Just wanted to add that 2x3x4mm LEDs do have that issue in general when used with some keycaps. I've dremel'd those LEDs at a 45 degree angle to resolve the issue in some cases. However I've found that if I'm really careful about getting the SIPs seated correctly and that the switch top is fully closed, that it's almost never an issue.

I have the same issue, it's because the LEDs are too tall. My SIP sockets are seated fully and I only feel it at the very very bottom of the keypress so I just snipped a bit off the top of the LED.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Did that actually work out for you? I tried that and the LED just exploded. :D

Before I start rebuilding, do you think 1.8mm LEDs would work better for my case? Do those even fit into SIP sockets?

Thank you for your help!

Are those in SIP sockets or not? Sounds like a loose connection to me, either you can try to reheat/add/fix the solder point or check if the led is faulty.
