i thought that one had eng characters too.

really i would buy it just for the box.

seriously i would want one of those just for the kitsch value. Hate to use phrases like "stupid awesome", but it works perfectly for the "$15 800DPI ULTIMATE GAMING KEYBOARD FOR GAMERS" (and here I am typing away like a fool on some obsolete 50dpi keyboard.

I wonder how much it would cost for cherry to do a run of doubleshot hieroglyphic keys? It's probably VERY expensive to design new letters, new moulds or w/e... but it could serve a rapidly growing niche market. (the keyboard-savvy egyptologist demographic has been growing steadily since Q3 1999 IIRC)

what do you wanna bet the importer would **** up and they would come back in demotic? I can't read that ****.

this vs the NKRO filcos...

other than NKRO, does the filco have much on the cherry?

cause the filco preorder is tempting
but also like double the price
blank keys would be nice, finally an accurate keyboard for colemak... but... $121 vs $65...
and the nkro... but i already have a gaming keyboard, my hhkb.  this one have ANY transposition rumors or anything?  i got my filco really cheap and all, but really wish it was the NKRO version just to avoid trouble.

I'm also wondering this.

Well, I already have a Cherry G80-3000 in a UK layout that will be arriving on Tuesday, but I'm considering whether it's worth also getting a FILCO keyboard - I'm going to see how it goes with the Blue switches, and if I really like them, then I might consider getting a blue switch FILCO, if I think I could like the brown ones more then I'd get the brown ones.

The two things that bother me about the FILCOs is that even though they just started selling them in the UK, they're selling us the US layouts (that seems to be all there is), and also, the price converts out to $185, compared to the $134 from Elite Keyboards.

Is there much of a difference between a FILCO and a Cherry both with Cherry blues?

I usually use my Filco with the USB connector only (to get NKRO, you have to use the included PS/2 adaptor), and I have never noticed any rollover issues.

NKRO is a bit of a copout really. Model Ms only have 2-key rollover, yet I have never had any issues with it when using it for gaming purposes (I think Cherry uses a similar key matrix, so it would likely perform the same) On the other hand, a lot of so-called NKRO keyboards don't do it properly (although the Filco is proper NKRO as far as I know) The issue is more to do with solid matrix design than NKRO.

Do all Filco keyboards have those insanely bright blue lock LEDs? I'm still considering buying one (I really want a usable Cherry MX brown or clear keyboard) but I keep finding out things that turn me away and back to just getting another G80-3000 but with the clear switches.

I know they're meant to be cool and flashy but in my opinion blue LEDs are one of the worst things that have become popular in the past couple of years, especially when they're misused. Behind a diffuser, fine, or not running at 100% brightness, fine. But burning as bright as an LED torch or car lights, directly in your face is ridiculous. Monitor manufacturers seem to be one of the worst offenders. I've got an LG LCD at work but it's not too bad because the LED is behind a diffuser but I've seen others. The Dell Soundbar speakers - latest model has stupid blue LED smack bang in the middle. These soundbars clip underneath your monitor. I went for the previous model because it has a regular green LED (and better speakers too). Computer cases - stupid bright blue power lights. Speakers - stupid bright blue power lights.

Moderately bright (read: normal) Green LEDs are a million times more suitable for indicating whether I've got Num lock enabled or disabled.

actually blue LEDs are for the brown switches, the other LEDs are green for blue (irony) and red for black, which i doubt are as bright as the blue ones (if only because no one complains about them)

so since you are looking at brown, yes...
also wish the blank keyboard did not have the words "scroll lock" etc printed beside the LEDs

but yeah like you said they are very bright GAYMEN type LEDs, with a crystal (instead of diffused/frosted) type of lens/housing so they are very bright and make circles on the ceiling at night

i will be modifying mine soon, in some way, to reduce this

Damn, this is a deal breaker for me then. If they're really that bright (circles on the ceiling) I would never be able to get on with them, and I wouldn't have the necessary soldering skills to swap in normal LEDs. :(

I wonder if this would work: remove the top casing, lay a strip of "tights" (legging) material across so that it covers all three LEDs with a bit to spare (in case it slips), and then put the top casing back on. That might subdue the brightness a bit and the material hopefully thin and stretchy enough to go around the LEDs tightly (I assume that the bare LED pokes through the case? - no light pipes?)

I can confirm that the Green LEDs on the Cherry Blue boards are no brighter than average. I have heard that the Cherry Brown Filcos have bright ones though.

PFFT!  who said anything about that?

i plan on a somewhat less refined method myself.  probably a disassembly, and then sanding the LED casing as to 'frost' them, should cut the DIRECT light down considerably (but not take the overall output down that much)

but your idea is a really good one.  my first thought was to cover each LED in some sort of foggy plastic, but the LEDs do 'poke' through.  using something like pantyhose, as you suggest, should work because it would stretch with them.

Bottom Keyboard: Unmodified LED vs modified
[IG]http://geekhack.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=2822&stc=1&d=1245709270[/IMG]

The pic is old.  I updated the keyboard above with Red LEDs because I happened to have it open anyway.  Takes 5 mins but you have to have a soldering iron and some 10cent LEDs.

People like easy fixes. Last time my HDD went dead, I just jammed a penny in there. Now it's good as new.

I hope this isn't off-topic. does anybody own the G80-3000LPCEU-0 the Cherry MX Black Linear variant? this one has a EUR character at 5. don't hear about it too much.

here are some pictures.

it retails between $60-80 USD and available at 3-5 online stores. it seems cheaper to buy this keyboard for the sake of harvesting the switches versus buying them separately from digikey? it's also cheaper than a Deck Legend or SteelSeries 7G but it only has 2-5 NKRO?

PS, clear nail polish works good on dimming LED.

meet the Sunbeam Rheobus Extreme a Fan Controller with LED at 5v

most people used clear nail polish to dim the led, soldered a resistor or soldered new LED.

I think the last thing I soldered were some leads on a rechargable battery when I replaced the one in my Logitech MX1000.  Either that, or it was when I was doing the in-wall wiring for surround speakers in my house (soldering the speaker wire to the banana-plug wall plate).

Actually, I think I understand.

Here isn't a picture of an unrelated box which did not arrive thursday at 4pm, and did not contain any sort of keyboard of which I am not clicking on at this very moment. It definitely didn't come from any place called [REDACTED], of which i have no knowledge.

Please come back and let us know what you think of the G80-3000. It's still my favourite keyboard. I'm afraid you have contracted the keyboard virus, but it's fun. If one types a lot in a day, then investing money and time to find the right keyboard makes sense. However, the problem is that one may never find the one and only keyboard. at first, i didn't like it. at all. the springs are way stiffer than on my MX11800... "Too stiff" was my first impression.

Then again, the MX11800 was used. This is new, and has stiffer springs by nature to boot.

I realise that they'll loosen up over time, and I really like the PROMINENT tactile bump. I've typed about 8,000 words on it since thursday afternoon, and now I love it. I'm keeping in mind that the springs are new and may be built this way... To loosen up gradually over time.

It's also a very light and flexible keyboard. There isn't much "bulk" to it, and I'm not a fan of the snap together construction. It could be a bit more solid. Though, for $60, it's FAR better than any keyboard I've used in the past.

I like the simple and understated design, and the lasered keys which have this really cool embossed feel to them. I'm also loving these concave homerow keys.

It will take me a few months to really break in, but my initial impression is only "good" not "great"... Could just be that I hyped myself up for some uberkeyboard. The tactility is perfect, but it will take me some time to get used to the heavy springs and the loud, sharp noises that it makes.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.

Give it some time. The keys feel stiff because you were coming from brown Cherries. I did notice them to be stiffer after I spent some time on my brown Cherries Filco. Of course, it was the complete opposite when I move to the G80 from my Customizer.
