There's nothing really to know about them. They're a great 'first' keyboard, and there's a good chance that you may never want another one.

But everyone around here always wants another one =P

This will be my first decent keyboard since the old Model M.
There's plenty of info in here about them, so I don't need any specific details.

I'm just glad that I found one for about the same price as a Scorpius M10.

There are some variations on these things, I'm lead to believe.

that's where I ordered it. Seems to check out I guess.

I often have to touch-type without looking at the screen, so I'm sure the sound won't bother me. It's really irritating to take notes from a book on a rubber dome board. I always end up with many typos due to the keys not registering.

Also this comes with a bonus in case I want to learn mandarin!

Oddly enough the Cherry catalog on the page you linked doesnt mention RC as a layout out code. But there are pics around of the Chinese ones. Basically it's just a US keyboard that also has the Chinese characters.

Do you still have your old Model M?

My Model M broke a loooong time ago. It had a good life.

Ummm... Not mentioning RC as a layout code...what does that mean?

G80-3000 LSCRC

G80-3000 - Full sized keyboard using MX mechanical switches.
L - Laser Shot keycaps
S - Blue 'clicky' Switches
C - Has Windows Keys
RC - Chinese Layout

The Chinese layout is the one pictured above. It is basically the US layout with Chinese characters also on the caps.

Is there a chance that POSglobal's "part number" does not match the actual keyboard?

edit: it does say "mfgr part #"

I think that means that the description on the site may be that of another keyboard of a different part number. I don't think that they are going to give you the part number of a completely different keyboard to the one they intend selling to you.

I hope that's not the case. If it is, I'll just custom order one from gemini. I'm assuming they only get a shipment in after they recieve X amount of custom orders? I don't mind the wait.

Anyway, back to work for a while. I'll keep this thread updated periodically.

I'd be glad to see some various and random comments about this particular keyboard; opinions, comparisons, etc, that kind of stuff.

I'd call to make sure it's in stock. The other 2 places I called, totalbarcodes.com and geminicomputer are both back ordered on this board, until next year.

btw, I've had my Filco for less than a month, but  already getting another mechanical kb - got a Unicomp on order... sigh... My guess is by the time the G80-3000 gets in stock again, I'd probably break down and place an order too.

I'm not trying to rub it in for those looking for that keyboard, but I must have been lucky for they had it in stock when I bought my first one, and I got the second one within less than a month. I repeat, it is my favourite keyboard by far, even though I do like my Topre and my brown Cherries Filco a lot. A few things to remember for those buying this keyboard though. First, the keys feel very slippery especially if you are not used to them. They have a Teflon coating feel. Second, the F and J keys are scooped. But once you have gotten use to this keyboard, it's a fun one to type on. And third, some may find it to have a cheap built feel to it. I did not feel this way, but it is a very light keyboard.

I guess people can see how much I love this keyboard.

I'm just curious
What kind of shipping charges would I be looking at buying from a chinese/asian reseller? 5yuan? $100? $5000?

Also, are these things made in germany or czech republic? Is there a difference in quality?
As long as it's not bosnian i'm cool wit it.

If you were ordering from Asia, it would probably make more sense just to buy a Filco - with shipping charges the price would probably be the same anyway.

And what's wrong with Bosnia?

To me, it seemed like a case of the wrong crate getting shipped to the wrong place, and the retailers just found it was cheaper to flog them off than it was to send them back.

Anybody that uses the work "Shadenfreude" in a post should be wished good luck in his endeavors.   I am a bit worried though that the Chinese Lettered "blowout special" always seemed like an odd item for Cherry Corp to sell here so I'm even skeptical about December.   Whoops, I be shadenfreudin.

Good luck though - ya never know!

Were you able to find out if they had the keyboard in stock? Advice: Once you get this keyboard, just enjoy it and NEVER EVER come back here or you'll have a big big hole in your wallet.

Oh Well! This warning has never worked for anyone who has been here long enough.

No, they just had a machine for messages
Called their other number (local TX) and I got endless rings
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.

You've got to keep trying, this was how I finally got someone on the phone. In any case, they cannot use your credit card if they are not going to send a keyboard.

I don't like to be a bother :(
Working at computer shops and getting repeated calls with monotonous questions never bothered me, but I still have this constructed urge not to do it myself.
I'll try again in little bit.

I did however call a friendly local warehouse- who told me they have stacks and stacks of old IBM clicky boards for $1.49 each.

I'll have to wait till wednesday for that, though.

I would be pretty surprised if we see any new stock before next year, but I guess we'll see. I'll have to live with my g80-3000 with browns for now (also a very good keyboard and my current go-to board)

I'm pretty sure the G80-3000 with brown Cherries is a blast to type on as well. Each keyboard has its good and bad. Even a cheap rubber dome has its good side. It's cheap, if it gets broken by accident, then who cares? You can just replace it. On the other hand, if my Topre is broken by accident, I will not be very happy. Maybe this was why I got a second G80-3000 ;-)

So, I'm just gonna wait for Gemini or some other dudes to get a shipment in. The only places that appear to have them in stock are charging around $100 for them.

Xero, the G80-3000 with browns is the best keyboard I have typed on so far.  Smooth, light, tactile, but not very pretty.  It's a real "butter-face" of keyboards.

I'd say the G80-3000 has classic understated looks, but nonetheless attractive in its own simple way. It's not in your face good looking like a movie star, but more of a plain "girl next door".

it sort of reminds me like as if you put cherry switches in an IBM model M-sized case....now there's an idea....hmm! The big difference is that the g80-3000 has no metal plate and is surprisingly light, for it's size you expect it to weigh a lot more than it does. It feels cheap at first but once you use it, it's nothing of the sort.

it is a pretty awesome board. I still want the g80-3000 with blues just cause I want a clicky one, but I definitely type faster/more accurate on the browns.

After hearing all this jibber jabber about cherry browns, I went and bought a Compaq MX11800 on ebay for 20 bucks shipped. I hope it's in good condition... the pic looked like it was a bit yellowed (which I really don't mind. I'll probably paint the ***** anyway), they said 100% tested and working, that's good enough.

Now at least I'll get a good feel of cherry switches, will help me decide if the blues are a better choice.

Is anyone else on a "waiting list" of sorts for the g803000lscrc2? I'd like to know the best one to get on, for the best price ya know.

Compaqs are a great way to check out browns.  You may want to change out the switch on the spacebar for another key.  They use a grey switch, IIRC, and it is stiff as a muhfu*cker.  The thing to keep in mind, too, is that Compaq might be well used, and, thus, the switches ragged out a little, so be sure to "type" on the F keys a bit to get an idea about how less-used keys will feel.  Between that and normal typing, you should get a pretty good idea of how browns feel.  Keep in mind, the Compaq will feel closer to the G80-3000 than it will to the Filco.
