My favorite set I've seen is Penumbra, but is Skull Squadron actually harder to get based on supply and demand? The more I see it the more it climbs right next to penumbra for me. Just best guess on WTB classifieds and experience, what is the white whale keyset?

Soware is the keyset I desire the most. I had an opportunity to buy one or two a few months ago and decided on a new RA 2.0 set instead.. If anyone has a soware set, I will give you my firstborn and GMK Olivetti/paypal

SoWaRe or dyesub Cherry sets get my vote. Although now that it's been mentioned...a blank Topre set with the HHKB right shift would leave me hot and bothered.

Edit: You'd have to combine a ANSI keyset and a JIS keyset to get the results. Or find a Realforce 87/104 and a 108/96 and make your own  :p

I would put Penumbra as one of the rarest, if not THE rarest. Calm Depths + Pulse as close seconds

Those are all pretty damn common, just not up for sale often.  Pulse just has a hypeman and a Reddit circlejerk around it.

I knew of others that are far less common.  Soulfree teal, for example.  OG Red Alert doesn't cone up too often.  SoWaRe  isn't super common and I know there are old sets that aren't super common either.

Right, but maybe in terms of supply and DEMAND it is. Would you say there is a higher demand for Pulse than any of the others? I just saw one on ebay for ^$600 with 5 days left.. Gotta be that reddit hype train

Just because someone is insane doesn't mean there is a high demand for a keyset.

To me eBay isn't a very good measure of demand.

I'd argue the massdrop voting system is, and pulse seems to show up a lot.

And I meant unique in that there are a decent amount of blue/black keysets, including things like modern selectric or round 5a that people could get a similar effect with.

For me, it's probably the OG Red Alert set by sixty.  I remember it was so hard to get the complete set back then (not enough supply).

But it's not in such high demand.

I agree, original Penumbra and PuLSE would be the ones I think have highest demand / lowest availability ratio right now. It changes. Skull Squadron is wanted, but not like these two. Being a DSA set, it's not quite as popular and there was the DCS version run which satisfied some people.

SoWaRe is... DCS profile. So, while the colour scheme is rare and people like it a lot, the actual set is not that nice to use. GMK SoWaRe would be pretty baller, IMHO, but the interest check thread for it is only 6 pages and the project has been shelved for now, so I wouldn't say the demand is anywhere near the other two.

Blank Topre... still not as high demand, although the people who want it are vocal and have been left without it for a long time and the demand is certainly getting higher as more people get mechanical boards.

they don't really exist. you have to buy a blank ANSI set and a blank JIS set to get the right keys together.

DSA Retro is also similar to Skull Squadron in terms of demand, I would say.

I also think Hack'd By Geeks and Retro SA could become "in-high-demand" sets in future.

One key feature of these sets is that they were run as "limited edition" sets. Just a single GB and no license to the manufacturer to reproduce them. I like this a lot, as it makes the sets you buy in these GB's have more rarity value and are simply more valued overall by the owners and other enthusiasts (not just financially).

I think Ivan's Black on Black dyesub Cherry profile PBT set could have become a high demand one, but he ran a second run at lower prices to satisfy the demand soon after the first completed.

The upcoming Penumbra Round 2 may reduce demand for the OG sets, though, even though it will be fully sculpted instead of the original 1-2-3-3-3-4 profile.

If you look strictly at current demand (largely fueld by reddit users, since there are so many of them and they don't necessarily know the older sets), Pulse is probably way up there, along with Penumbra and others listed.

However, I think it's also interesting to look at the potential demand (though purely speculative), and for that I'd have to go with some OG Cherry Dyesub sets.  I think that if more people would have a chance to try these sets, they'd see how great they are and the demand would follow.  Again, speculation.  :)  This is the most I've ever spent on a set of keycaps, and I know many others who would spend similar amounts.  ;)

Calm Depths is pretty solid.  Pulse is great as well.  Penumbra's mods are okay but I think I'm burned out on white/gray/beige alphas as they didn't really appeal to me.

Texture, thickness, material quality, dyesub quality (crispness of legends).  Basically everything about them.  :)

Penumbra has a very appealing colorway, particularly with the solarized alphas, but it suffers from a (mostly) uniform, non-sculpted R3 profile, which strikes me as a disappointing waste of SA keycaps.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned OG Triumph Adler. Doesn't that sell for ridiculous money?

If such an item were to ever go on sale...yes.

If you don't consider rarity, dolch is the victor in terms of high supply and high demand. Everyone at some point has wanted a set, it looks consistently good on almost any board, and there is always a set available to those that need it.

:)  This is the most I've ever spent on a set of keycaps, and I know many others who would spend similar amounts.  ;)

I've oft wondered what is so great about Cherry dyesubs as I've never felt them. Is it the texture? thickness?

Texture, thickness, material quality, dyesub quality (crispness of legends).  Basically everything about them.  :)

until you see olivetti in person..

Who made the Olivetti keycaps?

Unpopular opinion, but I think Olivetti looks awful.
