[IC] Naked/Barebones switchless KBParadise V60MTS/V80MTS Kits
« on: Wed, 21 October 2015, 08:48:43 »
Price is not available at the moment but how many of you would be down for some V60MTS/V80MTS kits that include the following:

Kit
PCB: Everything soldered except the switches
Plate

Option(s)
Case
Stock ABS Keycaps
Stabilizer wires
Mini USB Cable

As a consumer how would you price it out?

Just the PCB? That's not worth much without the plate, as Alps switches require a plate. And what would you put it in?

If it's <= $40 I would be in for a V80 PCB.

Just the PCB? That's not worth much without the plate, as Alps switches require a plate. And what would you put it in?

You'd certainly need the plate, but I think the plate is an easier get than the PCB. I haven't seen a bare V80 PCB but as long as the controller isn't above the PCB we'd have a chance of putting them in sandwich cases or other non-two piece cases.

I guess it depends on the end goal. If you're just looking for a home for some vintage Alps, you still need the whole frame sans switches. What does KBP pay for one board's worth of Matias switches, like $5? They really couldn't offer much of a discount over the fully-assembled board. It's a neat idea as a consumer, but probably not a wise business move for KBP.

If anything I would be interested in a V80 kit.

I'm actually not super familiar with KBP boards. But the V80 looks a lot like a Filco. Is it the same OEM?

Unknown.

I am not running a GB or anything.  Just asking on KBP's behalf.

I own a Matias V60, it's my only experience with Alps. I would honestly be interested in just a white case that I could swap to. I understand the screw placements are different and you can't place them in a Vortex case easily.

A white case would look nice with njbair's Alpine Winter keys in my opinion.

I don't know what the insides of their cases are like but if they are phantom compatible I think there is a market just for cases.

Honestly probably a market for any and all keyboard parts only.

I've never used ALPs before and have always wanted to try some out.

I would jump at the chance for a full DIY kit, everything included but unassembled.

I will be monitoring this thead, but if we gather enough interest for you to take it to KBP then I would want to know what sort of options we have as far as case colour and switch types we have available to us.

Definitely very keen to get in on this if the price is right.

Good luck.

Are you talking about the newer Vortex cases?  Because the V60 fits Poker2 cases fine, including the various Aluminum cases I've used.

That's good to know. I was reading one of the Massdrop comments threads about the screw holes not being cut out in the PCB of the Matias V60 so they had to use glue on one of the aluminum cases.

Who even uses stock keycaps? We just chuck them aside and use our fancy ones. It's great that people are starting to make/sell barebones kits

I would interested in probably everything but the keycaps.  Looking to fully replace my last Cherry board which I only use for gaming.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Well up until very recently you didn't have much choice with ALPS boards.

I'd be interested in PCB + case - better than me butchering up a perfectly good AEK...

Yeah but the V60MTS is different, only one screw fits without modification. See here for details. Or have you done the modifications?

Hello, lurker checking in here :)

Got linked to this thread over at reddit, stoked that this could be a possibility! Just wanted to say I'd be interested in a PCB + Plate + Case + Stabilizer wire kit. I've got some harvested Alps switches stored away that I'd love to have put into a TKL.

Apologies for resurrecting a necropost, but I just now discovered this and I am very interested, especially if the board and plate would be compatible with vintage Alps switches.

My preference would be a V60, but I might also be interested in a V80.

Thanks.

TBH it's not too difficult to get a Hasu PCB and stuff your switches in there, modern Matias switches are pin-compatible with SKCM switches, so you're not really missing out on anything here. As for the plate, you will need to get one custom cut (a local sheet metal fab will be able to do it for you really cheaply, or failing that, use lasergist which is slightly more expensive). A Hasu PCB will give you a lot more flexibility anyway since it runs Hasu's TMK firmware, whereas a V60 PCB will be quite limited.

I know Hasu's currently sold out of PCBs, but if you're keen, shoot him an email and ask when the next round will be.  :thumb:
