Those $12 BINs and $9.99 auctions only show up when you search "HHKB" and not "Happy Hacking Keyboard". Nice find :D I may have to spring for one of these to satisfy my curiosity about the layout.

use autohotkey/whatev on your 87u, i think it would be an equally realistic representation (the keys making up for AHK's shortcomings), and free

I agree with AndrewZorn. Use autohotkeys, or xmodmap if you are on linux to emulate the key layout.  Its  a no-cost way to find out if you like the layout or not. I was able to sell my HHKB when I got xmodmap to work. Now I emulate the HHKB on all of my keyboards. Its pretty neat.
To be fair, the HHKB has more than the key layout going for it though. The small form factor and topre switches are important considerations to consider.

yeah, i had to do it to 'all' of my keyboards too... if nothing else, the backspace position seems impossible to get used to again on a regular keyboard

Having the arrow keys, page up/down, home/end right there without having to move your hand is what I like the most.
