ONE MINT IBM 1985 MODEL F FL5 FL 5 COMPUTER KEYBOARD ! 2 AVAILABLE H758 (eBay)

115375-0

115377-1

If these are in the condition the seller claims, it's quite a decent deal. (The upper one looks a bit yellowed in the photo, so I'd either ascertain that it's not, or ask for the other one.)

Since I got into the scene rather late and since I'm only mildly interested in Model M/F series keyboards, I always wondered this. I have been seeing these so often and go for such low prices that I felt they were common.

Was this untrue not too long ago?

If this one is yellowed, it's the first yellowed one I've seen!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I have been seeing these so often and go for such low prices that I felt they were common.

As with all ancient IBM iron, they come and go in radical cycles. However, after watching ebay closely for at least 4 years, I have never seen them turn up at anything like this rate. Often months used to go by without seeing even 1.

And soon Cindy is probably going to flood the market with several dozen more. I predict that prices will slump to a deep low by the end of the year, and after all that supply is exhausted, prices and scarcity will climb back to "historic" levels of about 1 per month hitting ebay and selling in the $100-$150 range.

Adding to what SpamRay said, I have read some threads, mainly on the bank president or some such who claimed that a whole store of Kishsavers (I think, not the most well-versed in IBM), could potentially hold sensitive information and had them all destroyed without giving her much of a chance.

I think she works as an e-cycler or someone who sub-contracts e-cyclers and businesses or something. I don't know all that much about her, but she's helped out a bunch of people on DT through her finds.

And just so you guys know, she tried to sell here a few times, but found geekhackers to be immature, petty, demanding, and cheap, so she refuses to sell here any more.

Does that apply to you as well then Fohat.digs? You're always talking down about GHers and I would consider you part of this forum.

I had a mixed experience with Cindy. She was a e-cycler who decided to sell the good boards she found to the community. Her initial threads were insanely confusing. There wasn't much organization. Then someone made a spreadsheet for her. I managed to buy a board off her (I can't remember what now :( ) through that spreadsheet. Then there was a bunch of beamsprings that came up. I politely PMed and emailed her with no reply. So I'm not saying she was amazing and spot on with GH nor am I saying she was the worst. I just had a meh experience with her as a buyer. And for FWIW, I don't frequent the DT forum much. I think now she gave it up and let another user sell a bunch of boards. I can't remember what his name is. I wish I could remember though. I want to give Space Invaders another chance.

Way more on topic, I'm loving all the F122 love coming up lately. Always glad to see Fs and people getting into them. I still think it's too big for me; I call this the aircraft carrier. But definitely great to see. And the price is nice.

The user is XMIT (he sells on GH as well). And Cindy was closing a part of her business, but still has been trying to help salvage keyboards for the community. There was some drama with someone telling people she was quitting completely and losing a bunch of beamsprings.  :'(

Who, me? Ha Ha. I do try to always be courteous and respectful, and I am certainly not immature or picky.

She is not a hobbyist or an enthusiast and wants to move quantity quickly. Expect what you buy from her to be dirty, untested, and possibly incomplete. Do not dare to complain about it because her prices are very cheap. That is the long and short of it. I think that people here bought gear at 1/3 of the going ebay price and then complained about trivialities.

But yes, she keeps people's "wish lists" in a set of spreadsheets that are arcane and incomprehensible.

And yes, she seldom checks her email and does not respond quickly, or maybe not at all.

I would guess that is it just dirty. Covered in some sort of residue.

I managed to get an SSK off her for less than I was expecting to pay.  It was not that dirty (a quick scrub cleaned it up nicely), and all the special SSK keycaps are there.  In fact I am using it to type this.

Communication with her (via DT) was fast and informative.

I do not recall her posting on GH, must have been before my time.

I really hate the mentality some people have in this community where they feel like people like Cindy owe such services to them. Like oh no, we're not going to get the beamsprings she promised. Wow, she's such a terrible person because I'm so selfishly lost in my hobby that getting such a keyboard is all I care about.

If they're so strung up on getting one, why don't they go try and deal with e-cyclers themselves? :P

/cynicism

Note that this has more to do about the drama revolving her quitting and being unable to offer keyboards as mentioned higher up in the thread, not with CPT's personal experience or anything like that. Drama over petty things is what I can't stand.

That might also be slightly impulsive of a reaction to have made too, since I do not know the true context of the situation and am just kind of filling in the blanks with my cynicism. :P

I don't believe so. M122s come in different types of cases, one of them having a top part looking identical to an F122, AFAIK you can't swap them though.

Thanks. Wcass's excellent guide is mis-titled: it should be M-to-F rather than F-to-M.

Beyond that, his guide shows how to adapt a 2nd-generation M-122 case (single small legs and no side button).

If you have a 1st-generation M-122 case, it is much easier, about a quarter of the cuts. You need to trim back the row along the front (spacebar) side, and about 3 of the fins along each side.

I just started on GH and I've already bought two boards.  Oh well, whatever makes me happy, lol.

If this one is yellowed, it's the first yellowed one I've seen!

I would guess that is it just dirty. Covered in some sort of residue.

That seems more likely. I've seen scratched and chipped F's, but never any that turned a different color. Not even the ones whose color was painted on instead of molded, like these.

As with all ancient IBM iron, they come and go in radical cycles. However, after watching ebay closely for at least 4 years, I have never seen them turn up at anything like this rate... I predict that prices will slump to a deep low by the end of the year, and after all that supply is exhausted, prices and scarcity will climb back to "historic" levels of about 1 per month hitting ebay and selling in the $100-$150 range.

Which means we should all snap up as many F's as we can, right now! Buh ha ha! Oh well, I didn't want to be married anyway.

Adding to what SpamRay said, I have read some threads, mainly on the bank president or some such who claimed that a whole store of Kishsavers (I think, not the most well-versed in IBM), could potentially hold sensitive information and had them all destroyed without giving her much of a chance.

"Hold sensitive information"? A keyboard? Are we talking massive technological ignorance here? How do people like that get into positions of authority?

When houses started getting electrical power at the beginning of the 20th century, some people kept their outlets covered because they were afraid electricity was going to leak out of them... I'm guessing some of them were bank executives too.  :?D

I had a mixed experience with Cindy... Then there was a bunch of beamsprings that came up. I politely PMed and emailed her with no reply.

Is it possible she hadn't seen your handle before, dude? Could she have thought it was a prank—especially over on Deskthority, where people tend to be more polite 'n' refined? If I didn't already know you, I'm not sure what I'd think if I suddenly found a PM from you... "Yow, is a biker gang recruiting me?" (LOL) Oh well, maybe I shouldn't have even brought up... I'm just theorizing.

I helped XMIT a bit with one of the spreadsheets he and Cindy put together that listed all the details of hundreds of vintage boards for sale, and got to know them a bit. For what it's worth, I think they're excellent people, and that they're really not in this for the dough. I think they've just been big vintage hardware fans for quite a while, and they like the idea of keeping hard-to-find cast-off boards out of the landfills and getting them into the hands of people who want to make them beautiful and useful again.

Many of Deskthority's members are in Europe, too, so they tend to be more civilized (for lack of a better word) than we Westerners. That may have made it seem more practical to distribute quantities of highly coveted items in as fair and organized a way as possible, with a minimum of bloodshed. Anyway, I've seen nothing but enthusiasm and gratitude on DT for C. and X. and their efforts.

Are these cases swappable with an M-122 case?

Well, the bottoms of F's aren't like M's at all... They're a big metal plate. (You've already seen that if you've followed the modding links the guys posted for you.) So they're even more massive and imposing than Model M's, which most people consider pretty heavy-duty. But it sure makes F's fun to type on. They're real pieces of computing history, too... The first time you see an F-122 in person, it may take your breath away. That's how I reacted—they're that impressive.  :?)

DT members are also generally much older and more mature, and far more interested in vintage gear rather than trivia like gaming and key caps.

The M-to-F is not a drop-in swap. There is the long back bottom binder strip, and Fs have metal inserts to accept machine screws rather than plastic posts with regular screws that bite into the plastic itself. As cobbled-together kludges go, this one is pretty simple, but there are modifications and compromises to be made.

One thing that makes it worth doing is that the material from which M cases are molded is so superior to the brittle F plastic with its "outer skin" which can be chipped.

I haven't engaged much conversation on Deskthority, but I do enjoy the atmosphere and like posting on there. It's really laid back. GeekHack isn't so bad, but there is far more BS that crops up here than DT.

That said, I see this forum and DT and /r/MK as part of the keyboard COMMUNITY, and I have no forum that I find superior or inferior to one another. I think there is helpful information in each area. Picking sides is kind of a silly thing in such a niche community, though I have seen negative comments about one forum or another on each side of the fence, DT included.

If I was into Model F and Model Ms, then taking on a project to put an F-122 into one of those battleship Model Ms would be amazing! I'd loooove to do that myself to combine a more resilient plastic of the M with the heavy solidness and capacitive functionality of the Model F.

Hehe. I like Model Fs! It's just that I've designated myself to stick within a certain area so my wallet doesn't disintegrate. I'll keep Model Fs to the "once in a life time chance to stumble upon one" category for now. :P

They are cool, but Alps are my one true love. If I could find an IBM 5556 with sphericals.

An E3E can dream.  ^-^

I've found GH and DT to both be some of the nicest communities I've ever posted on (haven't done anything buyt read some on reddit).  And that's saying a lot since I'm registered on literally hundreds of forums and even have one myself.

I think that positive experience reflects on the characteristics of the individuals who are into fine keyboards.  I for one am glad to associate myself with such a community.  :thumb:

The metal bottom pan is, in my opinion, one of the greatest assets of the Model F. The only part of the M which is superior is the top case shell.

The metal bottom pan really *is* the case of the Model F and the top shell piece is simply dressing.

PS - I have taken a link to reddit a few times but can't really understand what it is. If it is something like Facebook or Twitter then I am too old and too private for that.

The "discussions" about keyboards seemed inane.

It's a different format, but still the same thing--threads and posts.  It's a bit more of a throwback to the way forums used to be as messageboards.  It takes a bit to get used to, but is quite nice.

Reddit can get really silly sometimes. I can gel with the humor, but other times I'm put off by it a little, haha. Generally what gets to me most is when I see a whole bunch of people following a trend to the point it seems like they're barely putting any thought into posts. I get it. Memes are like internet inside jokes and it's fun to join in, but lol. I guess I just don't keep up with it all.

As someone who has a blue alps board (the Fame in my sig) with a metal back panel, I'm happy to hear of all the accolades toward the metal bottom panels of the Model F. Hopefully the same applies to Alps, since there aren't many blue alps boards with metal bottoms!

What is it about the bottom metal panel that makes the Model F even better aside from heft and durability?
