Hello GH
« on: Tue, 03 November 2015, 06:57:28 »
Hello GeekHack,

I'm Franklinscudder from the UK and I just made an account having lurked for a while mostly as a reason to make cute little pixel art versions of my keyboards! ;D The boards are a Rapid-i (ISO-UK) currently wearing cheap Tai-Hao white doubleshots and a few HotKeys to make it pretty ;) and a Dell AT101-W I rescued from a bin at uni, cleaned and repaired, all stock.

Currently looking for some nice mods to spruce up the Rapid-i, so if you know if there are any available give me a shout!

Welcome!

Always nice to see someone that fancies making pixel art.
People have been modding CM Rapid-i's for some good time now. For its price I think that it's a solid TKL board with ISO layout, my only beef would be the crappy LEDs.
I'd suggest having a look at the CM case section for some neat modded cases: https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=152.0

Yes, I've been lucky with the LEDs so far (fingers crossed that continues) although I've heard the horror stories. Modded cases sound great, Ill definitely look into that! I kinda hate the fingerprinty matte thing going on on the stock one so thanks for the link!

Welcome to Geekhack!

More people able to make pixel art are always welcome :)

The simplest way, as you've probably already worked out, is to find a keyboard similar to the one you're making and just modify it.

Have you found the spreadsheet in that thread listing all of those made so far?  A very useful resource.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
