New to the forum, not to the clackiting
« on: Thu, 12 November 2015, 11:11:07 »
Hello,

I'm a software engineer from Dallas, TX. I'm a mathematician by degree so I have a weird thing with my "tools" I have had the same pencil and eraser since 7th grade. I can't function without them. I freeze up. It's weird. When I graduated I got into software development and once I got settled I was introduced to model M keyboards from an old timer. From there it went on towards my first purchase of a mechanical keyboard which was the Rosewill 9000 with the blue switches about 7 years ago. I also own a CM Quickfire ultimate and most recently a CODE.

However, these entire world of keycaps is new to me. I'm immediately obsessed. I already bought some pretty looking ruby keycap from a group buy(I also discovered Massdrop) and eventually wound up here. I've seen so many keycap sets I like but none that I just HAVE to have just yet. That is my weird thing I guess. I like them all and you would think I would buy them all...but there is always that itch to just wait and see.

At any rate, I don't know much about keycaps. I mean I've done some reading and whatnot but to have a stellar conversation like those in threads around here, not there yet. But as obsessive as I am, I'll be in on it soon.

It's most definitely a fancy mechanical pencil. A Staedtler. I mean it's not like a hundred dollar one, but it was like 15 bucks when I got it when I was in school instead of Pokemon cards. I remember the decision clearly. It's my lucky pencil.

I've got one of those, they're nice. I like my Rotring 600 more now though :).

Welcome to Geekhack!

I still have an eraser I bought in 1984.  And a Digital mechanical pencil I got when I did a course at Digital in about 1988, although that broke a while ago.  I still keep it for sentimental reasons though, although I cannot now recall what they were.

If you were introduced to Model M, why did you go downhill? :p
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I don't often write in pencil. But, when I do, I use a Staedtler drafting lead holder and a lead sharpener.

I found this thread when searching for "Dallas" to see the DFW meetup. Those happen every now and again, swing by if you can! :thumb:
