From what I can tell it's basically because most of America hates Jesus, so they use Thanks Giving to be like; "oh hay Jesus, did you say it was your birthday next week? Yeah well all those friends you already invited are coming to my party instead, and we are having turkey and **** so **** you Jesus"

Pretty sure that's the reason.
