options for tenkey cherry blue?
« on: Wed, 18 November 2009, 08:53:42 »
So I've decided it might be worth trying a cherry blue keyboard and having been brainwashed by the good folks here I first went to find a filco, but there are no tenkey blues in stock and "december" seems a bit vague for a shipping date, especially since I'm on an asap schedule.

So what are my other options for a nice looking (read: minimalist) 103-104 key board with cherry blues that I can get within, say, a week? The Scorpius M10 and older Das (on sale) seems to be it, but all I seem to read about is dodgy soldering on the Scorpius and dodgy controllers in the Das (which has that ugly USB hump anyway).

Any other options to consider?

A Cherry G80-3000? I've just gotten one, along with a Filco with brown switches. The build quality is nowhere near the Filco though, and it does have a 'pinging' noise from the case, but there are mods to fix this.

Actually I'd get the Filco Cherry Blue tenkeyless since it IS in stock but since you specifically asked for the fullsize keyboard...

I'm considering, but still grappling with the idea of a separate keypad and whether or not that'll still allow me to use all the special-character combos I need (like alt+0163 = £) if the keyboard is ps2 and the numberpad is USB.

Can anyone confirm if this'll work?

Maybe use the US International layout instead?

December is the real shipping month for the blue 104 Filcos. Short of disaster, I don't see any delay on this one.

Good to know... but any idea yet which end of December it might be?

hmmm... that could still be beginning or end of the month. To clarify... would I potentially receive said keyboard before said infamous holiday shopping season screws delivery times and dates up ?

For the record, I think the soldering issues with the M10 have been resolved. I'd still get the Filco if at all possible though, they are really great keyboards.

This choose-a-new-keyboard malarky is just doing my head in. I can see why everyone just buys all the keyboards out there. Browns, blues, topre, alps.... and that's before the quirks of each brand and infamous holidays. It's exponentially mind-blowing.

If you're looking for a keyboard with blue cherry switches, you might be able to find one on Ebay. I'd take a look there as I've seen a good number of good deals there.

I see Ergogeek is selling them on eBay for $60 a pop. Not bad for a Blue Cherry board!

Do you have a source for this?

The bad reports of the M10 quality issues is the only thing stopping me from getting one... well, that, and the fact that I need to save money and stop buying keyboards.

I've seen reports from people who bought them over the past year... Ask Wellington, he recently sold one off. Timw4mail also has one that appears to have held up well.

Overall build quality probably wouldn't be as high though.

It could be that Amazon (or the sellers) had old stock? But either way, I guess there's no point in playing dice when a much better alternative is out there, even if it is twice the price.

Unfortunately, we know this all too well around here.
