Question about M5-1s and M5-2s
« on: Sat, 21 November 2009, 17:04:09 »
Are the trackball parts removable from the keyboard? From looking at these keyboards, it seems like the Trackball module is secured into the keyboard as opposed to being a part of the case. I assume that if the controller logic is anything like that of my old Endurapro, the mousing part is implemented on a seperate logic board that is then hooked up to the controller... I ask because I was wondering in theory whether it would be possible to move the Trackball from one keyboard to another.

The trackball modules are not molded into the case. However, there are holes in the case where the module can be attached. The M5-1 and M5-2 (Lexmark, NOT Unicomp) have the same controller and the trackball and keyboard modules can be disconnected via a ribbon cable inside the unit.

Mhmm, I was thinking it would be something along those lines. So all you'd have to do is is drill some holes, fix in the Trackball and add in the new controller?

You would also need to cut a hole in the upper right of the case, too. But I believe that the keyboard unit of a standard Model M is compatible with an M5* controller.

*The family of Model M's with integrated trackballs manufactured from 1993 to 1997 by Lexmark, not a specific unit, is referred to by the term "M5".

Oh, so the Trackball plugs directly into the M5's controller?

On the Endurapro, and possibly the M13, the Trackpoint is hooked up to a seperate controler, which in turn is hooked up to a standard controller.

The trackball is on a PCB which plugs into the main M5 controller. The keyboard plugs into the same controller, as does the SDL cable.

I'm not sure about the mechanics of the M13 though. I'll have to see if I can find one for cheap some day.

Mhmm. I'd say that the controller logic for the Trackball is integrated into that PCB.

I must post up some pics of the Endurapro I disassembled. And indeed the M13 when it arrives in (apparently the plane with the parcel took off this morning)

I'll have to take apart the M5-2 I got sometime and take some photos.
