Made a geekhack account!!!
« on: Mon, 11 January 2016, 17:23:56 »
Hi all! I am excited to join this community!

I entered the world of mechanical keyboards around September of last year when I ordered a Ducky One with brown switches, which was a new fullsize blue backlit keyboard for a nice price with awesome doubleshot keycaps. However, I ended up selling it on ebay (some bogus justification to myself like "I don't need backlights pff" but I really just wanted to try out new kinds of keyboards) and bought a black/gray pok3r with browns again, which I also liked, especially with those pbt caps, although their print wasn't as impressive just seeing as it would likely rub off super fast. I decided I didn't really want a 60% as a daily driver, though (bogus excuse again), and I returned the board to mechanicalkeyboards.com (paid restocking fee... ugh) and bought a barebones WASD TKL with browns as well as some cheap blank black abs caps from maxkeyboards.com since I was worried about pbt compatibility with costar stabs (wanted those though because cherry stabs had seemed mushy to me on the previous 2 boards). This one didn't impress me as much, and the browns felt pretty sandy, more so than on my previous boards. Soooo, I returned this one and kept the caps, and picked up a Realforce 87U 55g, which I currently have and love (never going to give this one up, don't worry).

Future plans are, get a planck with some white leds and dsa caps (some blank colored ones to try to emulate an EVE theme or something similar, I'm really sad that you can't seem to get dsa retro anymore as those are beautiful) or maybe some nice pbt oem caps and hope desperately that there's a new zealio gb this month as seemed to be the plan so I can get some switches. I think I want to pick up some 62g linear clears for that, which are almost out of stock on zeal pc (only 17 left or something), although 65g linears still seem available so I could go for those as I think the 3g difference wouldn't be a problem. The purple stems on the ergoclear clones look so nice but I want a linear switch as I have my topre for tactility  ;D. Mainly want the zealios for the awesome clear housing, customized spring weight, and the smoothness of gaterons compared to stock cherries. Very excited to keep playing with keyboards of all types!!

Welcome to Geekhack!

A shame you didn't use the multiple keyboard experience to try some different switches.  Some people love browns, others say they are just gritty reds :p

When you have been using various keyboards for a while, you may very well discover that a 3g difference in switch weight is huge!  I went from blacks to clears, and although I love my clears I can't help think that they might be better if they were, say, 3g or so lighter.

Or maybe I just need to learn not to bottom out so much :))

Given the popularity of Zealios, I'd be surprised if there were not more at some point in the (hopefully near) future.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
