Got my G80-1800
« on: Tue, 24 November 2009, 07:08:57 »
It arrived today from 42.tar.gz in Germany. Packaging was excellent. Very happy with this. Photos will be here when I sort out my Ubuntu*

So, initial thoughts on my first Cherry based board as a dedicated Buckling Spring fan.

I like this. It feels easier to depress the keys, though I have to Maintain focus on not bottoming out. It is much much quieter, the Fiancée will adore this, as she has had to put up with 1391406's and the M13 for a long time, and the PC is in the front room. Physically, I like the angle it sits at with the legs up.

I need some Keycaps for it though, as Her Ladyship is not interested in Touch typing, and the German layout will get to her. I might force the issue and go Otaku with this though, as i think she will find it easier to use blank caps Vs being distracted by printing that does not correspond to the set layout on the PC.

I have already switched the Y and Z keys, but with the difference in the angle of the caps, this *bugs* me. Anyone fancy trading for some Cyrillic Doubleshot Alps caps? ;-)

*After I plugged it in, and restarted, my Ubuntu decided it wasn't going to play nicely. Packages rebuilt, X started, but it's denying me permissions to mount anything other than the EXT and swap partitions.

I modded mine today.. kinda. Swapped all the switches for blues and changed the keycaps. No more QWERTZ German layout for me.

The QWERTY keycaps I used are from a NIB 1997 G81-3000 (ANSI Layout), they are the much thicker POM keycaps that Cherry used for their lasered models back then instead of the PBT crap they use today.

Next thing I'll try is drilling into the PCB and convert this to ANSI layout. I guess it shouldn't be too hard.

I'm bugging Brian at thekeyboardco, com about blanks for this (We love having Vendors here iMav, although both my missus and wallet will disagree with that statement).
I like it a lot, the Blacks beating all Alps I have tried by a long way (I own pinks, and have tried a few others), but they haven't displaced my years of love for Buckling Springs.

Still, I may just annoy the missus, and do a webwit, and just slap a load of random colours on it, see if we can out-garish That Other Forum... ;-)

On the whole, having swapped the Z and Y around to approximate a QWERTY layout, and despite the aforementioned keys being off-height, I like the board.

One of my better purchases.

I'll wait until I can smuggle more boards in here before I go modding any of mine. She was shaking her head in disgust when I set about a 1391406 with a soldering iron in hand. She would kill me if I touched a brand new board... despite me telling her that that just makes it *more* fun.

Are you sure about the POM part? I thought it always was PBT, just thicker back in the olden days. (I guess they reduced the thickness when they did away with two-shot keys entirely, since with lasered lettering you don't need that much. It definitely didn't help the key feel on G80s though.)
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

I'll buy some kbds and send them to you to "DO", then your missus have no say in the matter of your entertainment as it is DOING a favour for a friend.
