GMK Durability
« on: Tue, 19 January 2016, 22:37:13 »
Hey there, I recently acquired a GMK Hyperfuse set. It's currently on my board. But I'd rather avoid seeing it shine. Should I be worried about that since they are abs caps, or is the GMK stuff durable enough?

If you use it, it will shine. But don't let that stop you! This is one of the reasons why there is sometime a "spacebars" child buy, because that's usually the first cap to show the wear. Sometimes is nice to have a nice worn in set, but some folks don't care for shiny bits. But what's the point of getting a set of you don't wanna use it to your hearts content?

Y'know, I used to be hot and bothered by shining, but I saw one of Hoff's white-on-black sets (forgot which one), and the shine actually looked really, really good. I think because the entire cap was shiny, not just part of it.
Like, a worn and loved shine.

I haven't actually seen any real shine on GMK caps - all the photos I have seen are old OG cherry doubleshots

I've got sort of oily fingers and after using Hyperfuse for 4 months saw no signs of shine whatsoever

I keep swapping my sets around, and haven't noticed any shine on GMK sets.

I usually get an extra space bar just in case.

And you can always put a strip of clear sticky tape along the space bar to protect the upper surface.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've been hoping to cultivate a nice shiny patina on my GMK Red Alert, but no such luck yet. I think I need greasier hands.

Embrace the shine!!   What a bunch of pansies   ;D ;D

Nice worn out GMK (and OG Cherry) caps are customized built for comfort keycaps!!

If you don't want/like shine, then leave the caps in the bag they came in LOL!!

Evenly shined keys are nice.
The problem occurs when only the commonly used keys show shine while others don't.
I then have to take all the non shiny keys and rub them extensively against my sweaty greasy fingers (I do this after sport and eating fries) until every cap is shined evenly.

Yeah, it'll shine eventually. I type a fair amount and my GMK, if used regularly, does shine, just like anything else in ABS. I think it looks nice. It certainly feels nice. I buy things to use them, so what some might look at as a deficiency, I think makes it look well loved.

LOVE YOUR GMK!

You've put it so nice :) I've seen people obsessed that the caps(that goes also for artisans) or the board would lose resale value... For me the bast part is using, I also buy only to use, shine is part of the beauty of these. I love the spot of shine on my spacebar, the best clack I have ever seen was a OG Tri where the face/skull had a bonny look from using it.
Keyboards with everything that comes with them are supposed to be used and enjoyed and not worshiped.

So yes, in time there will be shine on GMK caps so what ?!
