[IC] Cherry MX Lock - ROUND 2
« on: Thu, 21 January 2016, 22:11:36 »
Google Form

These switches are MX Lock switches, a Cherry switch that locks upon press, and unlocks upon the second press. We are ordering MX1A-31NN, or plate mount MX Lock switches.

I am looking into MX1A-31NW, or PCB mount MX Locks, but it is a slim possibility, so don't count on it.

The stock is NOS(new old stock), so all switches are brand new. They are readily available, so when the group buy closes there is little to no lead time.

MOQ is 100, pricing is $5.40/switch.

Pricing is a tad higher this round, due to me not factoring in some additional costs(shipping from the distributor cost me about $50...)

I will be handling shipping and logistics.

Shipping is $3.50 First Class or $6.50 Priority Mail in the US, international is $4 to Canada, $6 anywhere else. There is a $1 mandatory group buy fee, as well as PayPal fees(4.4% :( )

Count me in, the switches are pretty pointless but I love them! :p

I got one in my Jane right now, however the keymapper doesn't support it.

Cool that you are running these again, I can not decent reason to use one. Would be funny to build a planck or something using only lock switches :P

Could these be used to, for example, lock a function layer on a custom? Like, hit it and lock a numpad on a planck or something?

dumb question:  do people have any interesting uses for these besides toggling FN layers?  for gaming, perhaps?

That's what they were made for - they just stay pressed until you say otherwise :)

Pogo-stick mode (always jumping) or escapee mode (always running) perhaps?  Not sure actually helpful :))

Maybe cruise control at full speed could be...

I'm curious about these for a custom build. Two questions...

1) Do they play well with modern OSes? Specifically, do they maintain their software lock after a OS shutdown/restart?

2) Can they be used with LEDs?

Most pcb's doesn't support leds to be used with MX Lock due to the design.

The led position is different than the other switches.

I'm probably going to have to jump in for a couple of these. Missed the last few times these were up. I need to get my refund from 7bit for his buy too.

1. It's a hardware lock, so probably depends on keyboard controller and firmware.

2. The LED is offset to the right of center, so may not be compatible with all of the PCB positions. (From ortholinearkeyboards store.) Sounds like a yes for a plate mount hand wired, probably no with pcb.

It's a hardware lock (the switch is physically in one of two positions) so it will remain pressed until you press it again.  Doesn't matter if the computer is switched on or off when that press happens, the switch itself will remember whether it's pressed or not - as far as the keyboard and OS know It's no different to you holding down a normal switch so there are no compatibility issues.

as a test, you could just hold down the key while doing a shutdown/restart and verify that the behavior is what you want.

so we've met moq by a factor of 2x, so I will start the group buy in ~two weeks?

once the group buy has started, i'll probably leave it open for a month(i know that there are a bunch of gbs going on so i'd like to give everyone adequate time to pay, trust me, i know that feel)

i will also be picking up a few for resale after the gb is over, so if you can't get the money together, no worries.

let me know if you guys have any questions.

I've been planning to (and I should have 3 in the mail right now) use them in the fn key on a 60%. That way I don't have to worry about holding the key down

That's my use for them when it comes to boards that don't support a locking caps lock, anyway.
