Cherry blues: can you rest your fingers on them?

Hello,

can you rest your fingers - while not typing - on Cherry blues without accidentally actuating them? I can't do that on Cherry browns, and I wonder whether blues could fix this issue.

I don't have a problem resting my fingers on Cherry browns, but blues do require more actuation force.

Just use the browns more.  I don't have any trouble resting my fingers on the keys.  I use a wrist rest, too, and I find that my hands' weight is more on my palms/wrists than my fingers.  I could probably rest my fingers on 35g Topres without activating them, too.

If you want something that won't actuate when you rest your fingers on it, you don't have to look much farther than a Model M. Those things are very heavy-duty and the keys take some work to press.

Maybe that's the issue: I still don't use wrist rest (ordered a couple, we'll see).

Of course, I'd rather type on a Model M, but I prefer not to bother my office mates.

Ug. Yuck. Disagree. I've had two MY keyboards fail on me. Spent $1 and $5 respectively, and I still feel ripped off, despite the pristine key caps.

Haha, someone noticed my careful choice of words.
At least the case quality is good. Accidentally kicked mine out of the keyboard tray into a wall (then it fell 3-4 feet onto wood floor, probably birch). No cracks or problems yet (about a year ago).

Yah, the MYs (Cherry Corp G81 series) would be an acquired taste in my opinion.

The contrast makes using BS at home just that much better.

If you ever watch anybody at a cash register you can see how they just jab those keys.  Perfect for that kind of application but not for normal typing.

The jabbing is almost like hitting a punching bag, satisfying.
Main reason I use it at work.

Hey, let's start a discussion about which Model M makes a better club.
I say the heavy duty silver label 1390120 makes the best club followed by the black label Model Ms.  Wait, maybe this has already been addressed in the "Did Quality Decline" thread.  

Edit:  And BTW, you can rest your fingers on ALL the different Model M varieties.

Yeah, MYs work reasonably well, but the feel is just... meh. Basically the spring is too short, giving a force displacement curve that rises too fast. Too little force at the beginning, too much at the end. I guess they won't bother with a redesign now, but something more akin to MX blacks would work better.

Most people tend to bang on them as if it meant their life, which is highly tiring of course. The trick is to write as lightly as possible without losing too many characters. Then it still doesn't feel great but is quite OK, depending on friction levels. Incidentally, the 1993 Peacock G81-3004HAD which I dug out to write this (feels like a tank) seems to be hotplugging-unfriendly - I have to connect it to the USB adapter first and then plug this in, otherwise it won't work. Hmm, now that works again - maybe the thing could use a new 'lytic.

Anyway, I'd still much rather type on my old Packard Bell (BTC) rubber dome, which incidentally is what I'm doing right now.

Oh btw, just played around with my spares G81 a bit. More recent samples should react positively to some greasing of the stabilizers on the big keys. Some grease in the actual "switch" mechanics (in the corners) seems to improve things as well (I tried silicone spray). The space bar now is smoooth. Of course I can't tell whether some of my silicone spray might want to creep in between the membranes in the long run, but that board is dead anyway.

The G81 are getting better the more they are used. I hate them when they are new, but at our university they had some that had been daily (ab)used for years and years, and those were quite nice. Not to be compared with MX, but pretty good.

I can rest my fingers on all of them, browns and blues included.
