so far i have ordered 3 because i know you guys will miss this then come in and want me to send them to you
i have decided on the microphone version, only because i am eliminating my mp3 player in favor of my phone which has a 3.5mm jack and thus can answer calls with it (pleeeease though i hope that its a 3way stereo+mic jack not just a stereo jack)

EDIT non-microphone version now out of stock but still taking orders ("3-5 weeks")

Are these better than the Shures?  I can't seem to find many good reviews for these.

Maybe I am just trying to convince myself not to buy them.

Good.  I didn't want to spend the money, but I didn't want to pass on this deal, either.  Now, I feel better about not being too quick to pull the trigger.

Status on my Amazon order is still grayed out.  I got them very early in the morning when I got the email and they still had stock and shipping estimate date shows the 9th so hopefully they will still process my order.  I also got the mic version.  You can replace the cable on these with non-mic or different jack if you wanted to.

I am going to pass this time.  I really like my Audio Technicas, and I am going to Chicago over Xmas, so I would like to have the extra cash. If they are still available for that price when I get back, I might pull the trigger. That, and IEMs don't fit my ears that well, and some reviews complain about the big size.

Lesson - don't spend more than $50 on earbuds. They have a very limited lifetime.

These break. Easily. But then so do Shures. I've broken the following:

SuperFi.3 - cracked housing
TripleFi.10 - cable socket detaching from housing (picture)
e4g - cracked cable
e2c - cracked cable
e2c - cracked cable
se530 - cracked / detached cable

Lesson - don't spend more than $50 on earbuds. They have a very limited lifetime.

That's another thing I'm worried about.  Not that I'm rough on my equipment; quite the opposite.  I'm just worried I'll do something stupid one time and break them.

The Shures have a problem with the cable housing material. It gets stiff and cracks within 3 to 6 months. The SE530s have a nice fit. They're overall, the best sounding earbuds I've tried.

The UEs housing will crack or detach due to pressure. Like when you take a nap while listening to music. The UEs also have a larger opening, so if you have smaller ear canals or use those extended silicone ear fittings, they will constantly push out of your ears reducing the seal and sound quality. IMO, the TripleFi.10 have a nicer high end than the SE530s, but lack a little bass.

If you want to try the UEs for cheap, These Altec Lansings for $33 are just rebranded UE SuperFi.3 which are $102. These, like other UE products are lacking on the lower end.

Definitely read the reviews on the higher end earbuds and if you purchase a nice pair, use them sparingly and with care.

Backordered, then it's back to $177.99. What are they doing?

You know, I think some of the smaller merchants bought some of these at $99 to resell with a big markup. That's why 3 of them popped up real quick under the 177.99 that was up earlier.

Can someone here comment knowledgeably on the differences between the ultimate ears and Etymotics ER4? I have the latter, and haven't been tempted to buy any other in-ear phone set, but I keep looking.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

My son practiced scissors on my Ety's when he was 4. The nice lady at Etymotic support said the warranty did not protect against "acts of child." It was far more pleasant a recovery than I feared. My only complaint is that the repair didn't colorcode red=right, black = left. I have to look closely at an earpiece each and every time.
