Built my new computer, but nothing is displaying? (Solved!)
« on: Sat, 20 February 2016, 00:06:43 »
Hey guys, a little while ago I asked for some help in recommended parts in building a computer!

The build is complete (as far as I can tell) but nothing is displaying!

For the sake of brevity and not repeating everything, my help request is documented on reddit here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/46ov9k/troubleshooting_build_complete_nothing_displaying/

TLDR: Built computer. Turns on, Mobo LEDs tell me nothing is wrong. No display (through gfx card or onboard).

Any thoughts and help?

Thanks guys

Have you tried anything other than HDMI?

Unfortunaly I don't have a choice at the moment. I was able to get around the problem by entirely removing my gfx card from the case and using the onboard gfx. It looks like I may need to update my bios before I can get the gfx card working.

You will definitely need to update the BIOS first. Having only a HDMI cable isn't ideal when setting up a new comp.

Ah, I didn't know that about HDMI. This monitor I'm using was a gift from my brother so unfortunately I don't have a choice. I'll keep that in mind when shopping for a new monitor in the future (I hear displayport is the way to go nowadays).

1.you may need to use on board graphics first to change the gfx settings in bios
2.I can't see if your gpu is properly connected
3.can't see if psu cables are connected properly
4. gpu might be bad- highly unlikely
5. for the sake of humanity do some cable management

all you did was unnecessary
just get a vga/dvi cable and connect it directly to the motherboard go into bios and make sure on-board graphics are disabled
if that still doesn't work refer to 4 and try a new gpu

You will definitely need to update the BIOS first. Having only a HDMI cable isn't ideal when setting up a new comp.

It may not need an update, but for sure take out the gpu and run off the mobo to get into bios and do your setup there (including what appleonama said about selecting the output).  Do all of your initial setup with the gpu out: windows updates, driver updates, initial bios setup to get your memory and storage in line.  Then plug the gpu in and make sure it is recognized.  Go into the AMD suite and set up your display settings (resolution, etc..).

If the monitor supports HDMI 2.0, you are good to go.  Your call on that one.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

Definitely probably wasn't the right word, but yes, don't plug in the GPU initially.

In the Bios Setting I can see where it says there is no VGA card in, but nothing where it says I can choose to have that selected before the onboard gfx card.

Any ideas? Regardless, I think I do need to install the drivers because I just finished installing windows and I don't even have the LAN driver installed -_- So I'm downloading drivers from my laptop to put onto a USB key haha -_-

Bios ->advanced -> onboard devices.  Make sure pcie is set to 16x.  A quick google search didn't show anything else, but definitely make sure all your drivers are installed from the website.  Do the lan one first so you can download directly, or just get them all on a flash drive and do them one by one.

from experience driver doesn't affect whether or not the gpu works.

your gpu will display some ****ty resolution until you download your driver then it will adjust to your monitors resolution

I hold EU and the original xcom close to my heart, xcom 2 is brilliant.

Just don't make the same mistake I did if you ended up picking Commander. I had to re-load a little too much since I'm rather bad and gung-go.
