[Question] Spring rattling sound on Realforce 87U 55g
« on: Tue, 01 March 2016, 20:38:20 »
My Realforce 87U 55g just arrived today. I noticed that when I bottom out the keys, it makes a very loud clicky/rattling sound when the keys bounce back. It's not when the keys are fully bounced back to their initial position. The sound happens when the keys are just released a little bit from the bottomed-out position. I think the sound comes from the spring. I'm not sure if this is common to Realforce keyboard.

I tried pressing down the keys really hard on my hhkb and then release the key. Only a few keys make a similar sound, and the sound is very small. But on the Realforce 87U almost all the keys have the spring rattling sound during normal typing.

Just wondering if anyone else using a 87U 55g notice a similar problem.

EDIT: I recorded a video to illustrate the problem. From 22 sec you can clearly hear the clicky sound I was referring to. I also compared it with my hhkb. If I press really REALLY hard on my hhkb, there is a similar sound, but smaller, and the hhkb doesn't make this sound at all during normal typing.

I did not notice this on either of my two RFs (55g and variable silent).

I would imagine the only way for this to happen is if the spring spiral was rubbing against itself, or somehow getting caught on the rubber dome as its lifted up. You could open it up, lift the rubber domes and try to re-seat the spring inside, but that's a very painful process, as once the rubber domes are lifted, it tends to be very easy to misalign the spring so the capacitive switch mechanism won't pick it up properly and they will stop working.

You could also try to just use it extensively for a while more and maybe the spring under the rubber dome might move around every so slightly until it gets into a better position, but to be honest I have no idea if that's actually possible, as I don't know how much leeway the spring even has under the dome during normal operation, so this is just speculation.

EDIT: to be more precise: if I press and release the keys really slowly, I do hear (on some keys) hear a very very faint "pop", like the spring sticks a little bit and pops of or something, but it's so quiet there's no way to hear it during normal use and far from calling it a "rattle".

Thanks for the comment. Yeah I opened my novatouch multiple times and I know it's a pain to put the springs back in position.

But at this point I really don't want to open it myself. I just got this from elitekeyboard and right out of the box it has this annoying problem. I would rather get a replacement or repair.

Just wondering if anyone else using a 87U 55g notice a similar problem.

You need to post a video of this issue. I used to have a rattling space bar but after removing and placing the space bar about 10 times it stop rattling.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to make a video. But I don't think it's the keycap. The sound still exists even if I remove the keycap and just press the stem.

hmm yeah that is weird

seems like it was assembled incorrectly, maybe the domes are slightly off.

I recommend you RMA that board
