Hello!
« on: Mon, 14 March 2016, 23:56:27 »
Hello! Been visiting GH quite often for a couple of months now, and finally decided to have an actual account to join in the fun!

GH has been especially informative to me and has satisfied my soul-crushing need to look at beautiful keyboards owned by others that I can only hope of getting. So many beautiful keyboards, so little money....

Anyhow, I currently own a CM QFR Stealth with MX Blues, which will be 3 years old in the summer! Love the keyboard, thought was the best thing in the world until I saw the magnificent JD 40, which lead me to uncovering loads of others out there. I recently ordered the JD 45 as my second keyboard, can't wait till it gets here!

I will love to build a custom keyboard sometime in the future, and doubtless GH will be extremely informative on that end. But for now, I just want to learn more about keyboards and just... look at them... wishing I have more money to purchase them....

Welcome to Geekhack!

The QFR/QFS is a great, basic, sturdy keyboard with no frills that lasts for ages.  I have two of them, both still going strong after a few years.

The trick is to pick a keyboard you need to have next, then work towards it.  If you try for too many new keyboards at once, it can get overwhelming in the wallet department.  But spreading the payments out over several weeks can definitely help :p

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks for the welcome! And good advice too rowdy, now if only I have more self-control and discipline... :p

QFR is indeed a very sturdy keyboard! I have been trying to take utmost care with it, but I realise the construction is pretty solid and can probably withstand a little bit of roughness. Won't want to do that to mine though, I hope mine will last for way longer! I also hope to mod it with Frosty Flake in the near future, once I get myself another TKL in case I do screw up my QFR (hopefully that won't be the case, and all is good!).

Any recommendations for keycaps to go with QFR? I am looking into getting Carbon SA keycaps, but will love to hear some recommendations!

My QFR and QFS have both been to work and back several times just chucked in my backpack.  No problems at all.  The only things to be careful of is the cable - exercise care when unplugging and plugging it, that is probably the weakest spot on the keyboard (as is the case with most keyboards).

You'll probably want to try a different switch if you do get another keyboard, QFR or otherwise.

QFR is a standard layout, so most sets will fit.  I'm currently using JTK WoB set with Electric Bluegaloo GMK modifiers on my QFS :)

Thanks for the welcome! GH is such a welcoming community! :)

I went to look up the keycaps, and boy did it look nice! Really nice combo!

Yeah I do want to try out the plethora of switches available out there. Topre in particular... I heard it's quite a different experience from the other switches. Thinking of maybe investing in a Leopold FC660c or a CM Novatouch. Just perhaps not at the moment while my second keyboard is on its way to me. But who knows, maybe I'll just go out and get one... ;)

Heh, yeah quite a drastic change ain't it? I was eyeing for a more compact keyboard for some time now, and was so heartbroken to find out that I missed out on the JD 40 until I heard the JD 45 was being produced.

I did indeed went for the MX Blue for my JD 45. I just love how clicky and tactile the MX Blue is, and didn't want to end up with possibly a switch I didn't really like on my JD 45 which will probably be my main keyboard when it arrives.

Welcome to Geekhack! And thanks for your JD45 order.

Thank you for making such an awesome keyboard! I knew I had to get one when I first saw some of your teaser pictures. Can't wait till mine arrives!

Topre is great!  It's not for absolutely everyone - there's a few sad souls out there for whom no keyboard is ideal :p

The best Topre experience is said to be a 55g uniform RealForce, closely followed by an HHKB (45g, case-mounted).

Highly recommended, but if you do try one please give yourself a few days at least using it exclusively if possible, especially the HHKB, to get used to the layout and feel.

Attend a meetup, if there is one near you - people usually take along all sorts of keyboards to try.

Thanks for the recommendations! I am looking into it, and I must say HHKB does have a real cute charm to it. Will really love to try them out proper before I set out on my merry ways of acquiring them. I can already hear my wallet screaming in horror at this thought of mine....

Will definitely love to attend a meetup! Are there any keyboard enthusiast meetup planned in Canada? :D
