Hello
« on: Tue, 29 March 2016, 10:20:52 »
Hey all, I joined so I can keep an eye out for any forthcoming numpad GBs. I've been lurking r/mechanicalkeyboards for the past couple months and have noticed that a lot of stuff I'm interested in (mainly numpads) comes through GH.

I don't yet have a full mech (just a Maxkeyboard Falcon 8 with MX Browns), but I am eagerly awaiting the next ErgoDox Infinity drop on MD. I recognize that's pretty much like jumping into the deep end, but I'm set on an ergonomic form factor since I have been using an MS Natural keyboard in its various incarnations for years (also using a Sculpt). I'm confident I can handle the soldering for the dox.

Anyhow, I look forward to participating in the community here.

Welcome! If you're looking for numberpads, keep an eye out on KingRama's Macropad that's in the works (he has a thread in the Artisan subforum).

That's not going to be a very good number pad, though.

Ah yeah, you're right >.<

If you're looking for custom GBs keep an eye on this one too: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79052.0

Not sure if there are any other ICs or GBs running atm for numberpads.

Awesome - the option with the full extra row on the top is the type of pad I'm looking for. I nearly pulled the trigger on the aluminum numpad that was on MD last week, but held off since I'd miss that full top (albeit extra) row.

Welcome  :D

Are you staying with the same switch type?

For the dox, I'm thinking of going with MX Browns. I'm considering something a bit heavier for the numpad, but I don't know. Thoughts?

Welcome to Geekhack!

As far as numpads go, there is this on Massdrop: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/npkc-17-switch-tester?mode=guest_open

Apparently the PCB is not that good (see the comments), but you can do this to it: http://imgur.com/a/Q2pjK
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If you miss that NPKC drop and you're excited about that numeric keypad you can find that on Ebay as a switch sampler.

Oh if you want to switch to a heavier cherry mx maybe try some vintage mx black switches. Or, a lot of people seem to like those new Zealio switches. I know I'll probably try them at some point  :thumb: Even if the name is a bit--I can't think of the word atm
