Hi all
« on: Wed, 30 March 2016, 18:28:06 »
Finally succumbed after lurking for a little while.

I spent the better part of a year reading about mech keyboards after starting a university degree that involves a lot of writing and wanting a more comfortable typing experience. I was lucky enough to be able to go to Japan a few weeks ago and held off til then so I could go to Akihabara and actually try some different switches before pulling the trigger. I am now the proud and very satisfied owner of a Leopold FC660C. It was definitely worth the wait and having tried all the common Cherry switches while I was in that geek mecca, I'm glad I didn't buy one of the MX keyboards more commonly available here in Australia. I experience some carpal tunnel pain and find the Topre switches far more comfortable for me.

The thing that made me finally join geekhack is the current KeyKollectiv Topre modifier sale (heard about it because I signed up to their mailing list). They require a geekhack or reddit account to join the raffle and not having either, but not being particularly interested in reddit, it was an easy choice to sign up here. This will probably be the start of a long and expensive relationship.

Welcome to Geekhack!

I nearly got an FC660C when they first came out.  Probably would have if the white edition had been available.  I ended up with an HHKB.

Things can get expensive shipping them down here, but there's a few stores with a sort of reasonable range of keyboards.

PCCG and MechKB are two that spring to mind, although only the latter still stocks Topre keyboards.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I checked out the HHKB when I was shopping around in Akihabara. Great keyboard but a little pricey, especially with the AUD not worth a lot right now! The Leopold is built like a tank though, very happy with it. I got the dark grey one with dye-sub keycaps. A real beauty even if I am keen for a splash of colour :)

I was lucky, got mine for $200 shipped from QLD!

The strange thing is that it was sitting on eBay for at least a week with no bids before I bought it.
