I have lurked around here a bit in the past after being introduced to mechanical keyboards by my brother last year. Right now I have a few boards in the stable, a shine 4 with blues, a Kul ES-87 with clears, a homebuilt Spirit 60% with gateron browns, and a not yet functional neutrino with clears and tactile greys.

Right now I am working towards finding what I consider to be the perfect layout, and that is for sure not a fullsize board for me right now, I have become a rather big fan of small keyboards with an external number pad. The other mini project I am working on right now is making a tactile board as quiet as possible so that I can use one in an open office environment. I have seen a couple interesting ideas around here so far, but if you have any ideas or builds that you might think would be worthwhile for me to look at  that would be grand.

That's quite a range of sizes and switches - have you got a favourite?

Topre is generally a good quite keyboard suitable for office use, say a nice RealForce 55g uniform.

Or Matias have some Alps-like switches that are claimed to be the quietest switches out.

Probably the clears or the browns would be my favourite, the browns have 62g and 80g springs in them, so you can tell I like a slightly heavier switch. I liked the blues when I first got them, but then fairly quickly discovered that they were too light for me, and the constant clicking was driving me up the wall. I bring that board out once in awhile now, but will probably end up selling it in the not too distant future.

I have been thinking about a Novatouch for its keycap compatibility mostly, and the ability to mod it into a ghetto type-s. Other than that I am thinking I might try and use some neoprene to quiet down the case noise on the Kul that I have for the time being.

I am still not too sure about going the Alp/Matias route, and only because of keycaps. Kind of a silly reason, but I do like having the ability to change what the board looks like rather quickly and easily.

The stiffer browns would feel like clear with less of a bump?

Tai Hao have some Alps sets around now.  For a standard ANSI layout, that is.  They are OEM profile, but really not that bad, considering the alternatives (there really aren't any).

Rumour has it that SP might have some Alps sets somwehere.

They are fairly similar to a clear in how stiff they are; but due to them being Gaterons they are so much smoother than clears, because of that they don't feel quite as stiff.

I might go the alps route at some point, I would have to find a board or custom that supports them though that I like. It is good to hear that there are options for aftermarket caps for alps though.

I am thinking that topre might be my next switch type though, especially after hearing about the new bluetooth HHKB last week.

I have not seen any prices for the BT HHKB yet.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was around $100 more than the existing HHKB models.

But if you like stiffer switches, a 55g RealForce might be more to your liking.  Many say that the 55g RealForce is the perfect switch.  But you can't beat the HHKB for portability!

I am thinking it will be roughly that expensive, probably the thing I like the  least about it!  :(  If I was to get one it wouldn't be for a little while. That being said I am a sucker for bluetooth, and am thinking about getting it set up on my Neutrino when I have a chance to sort it all out.

It would be nice to give topre a shot before I bought into it, but they are so hard to track down where I am located.

There's an occasional HHKB keyboard tour (two happened, or are happening, recently).  If you participate in the forum and become slightly more known, you might be able to participate in the next one.

Or keep an eye out for a meetup in or near your area.
