Hi From Illinois!
« on: Tue, 19 April 2016, 00:54:20 »
Hey guys,

I've been into mechanical keyboards for a while now but only browsed around on r/mk for most of it--figured it was time to sign up for a forum! I'm loving my Pok3r and my QuickFire Stealth, got a Dell AT101W coming in the mail, and I'm in the (very slow) process of saving up to finish building a Planck!

Mechanical keyboards is the best hobby I've taken up in years; it's relatively low-cost (OK, not really) and isn't super difficult for the average person to get into, but still has enough customization and geekery opportunities to keep you interested forever. And everyone on GeekHack seems super friendly and not snooty like a few other enthusiast forums can be

Looking forward to posting often!

Cheers,

Mechacontext

Welcome to Geekhack!

A couple of great keyboards you have, with another on the way :)

Keyboards can be expensive (especially if you start chasing artisan keycaps) or not.  If you keep your eyes peeled, you might find some bargains at thrift shops and similar.  Or dumpsters - there's a few threads about that.  It's amazing what people can find for only a few $ if you happen to be in the right place at the right time.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Illinois's aight.

That's one good thing about IL; PLENTY old old thrift shops. If there's one thing they have a lot of in Chicago, it's thrift shops. And subzero winter days. Those too.

Not yet, but if I build myself a numpad or macro pad soon I am certainly considering Greens!

If you do find something in a thrift shop, feel free to post pictures.

Will do! Planning on making a run to a bunch of shops when the weather out here becomes a little less schizophrenic
