The Filco Tenkeyless are very compact also, and have a more conventional layout.

Closest is the siig minitouch or the smk's from DSI.  It's a big hole in the marketplace.

Of course there are a lot of non mechanical/scissor/linear switch ones like the cherry g84-4100 line.

There should be cheaper Taiwanese HHKB2 clones next year.  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to make one cheaper than $250.

Mechanicals finally being noticed in Asia? They don't even have a importer in Hong Kong, just in Taiwan... Then again, people don't spend much on peripherals around here, shoddy made for internal-China market goods seem to be the norm around here, just I'm not surprised it took people so long to figure out mechanicals...

It occurred to me that I think you could add a line of function keys to a hhk by making a line of switches and double wiring in the matrix for both the function key and the number key?  I need to give that a try on my hhk hack....

Let's see, when you close the switch you would have two positive voltages and two grounds...would the voltages add and cause problems? hmm...

Not a good example.  The G84 have mechanical switches with tactile bump
(see ML switch in the wiki).  With 282x132x27mm, the G84-4100 is about
the size of the HHKB.  It is not exactly HHKB style though because they
squeezed more keys in the same form factor, making it a bit cramped in
comparison.

If it's being made by Costar, I think my $250 will be going to Topre anyway...

is that a hope or a rumor?
the HHKB has been around a while, with no significant imitators (of quality) yet.  lowpoly's is probably the best thing coming but it is still a far way off and not necessarily going to be cheaper than the HHKB.

It doesn't cost even $100 to make any of those keyboards. They just sell them for what people are willing to pay for them. It's just like graphing-calculators. It doesn't cost $100 to make a little thing with a 62x126 pixel monochrome display, 100k of RAM, and 256k of ROM.

The only way prices will be lowered for products like those are if it allows the company to increase their profit or prevent decreases in their profit.

And this talk of Costar being an inferior manufacturer is silly.  Win some.  Lose some.

I agree, Costar make keyboards with high quality keycaps, reliable controllers and exemplary build quality.

Shame they have made a keyboard with all three =P

I didn't just learn that. I've known that for years! I'm not nearly as dumb as you think, Mr. Condescending-Jerk.

Trust me. In America, cows aren't the only jerks around. If they were, driving in the city would be much easier.
