Hi, i'm a Houstonian french !
« on: Sat, 07 May 2016, 14:40:29 »
I have been reading these forums for few month and finally became a member.

I'm used to type with a TypeMatrix 2030 with the bépo french layout.

Currently typing on a Corsair K70 (for gaming) at home, and TypeMatrix for work. That's why I want to build my own non-stagerred mechanical keyboard and I need some help !

I am currently in Houston, Tx since 3 month, and for 3 years =)

Welcome! Sounds to me like you would like the Planck or Preonic keyboards. If you like staggerless layouts you might want to check out ortholinearkeyboards.com (AKA olkb.com)

Lots of reviews of these keyboards on youtube, and of course here at GH. I think the first Planck and Preonic video I watched was from Youtuber Barnacules.

Welcome to Geekhack!

There was a brief discussion about ISO layouts, including bépo.

Do you still use the bépo layout, even through you are in the US?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Actually, I think I would prefer keyboards like Truly Ergonomic or ErgoDox. It's my very first project, but I want something like a mechanical version of the TypeMatrix :

Yes, I still use this layout, I'm in the US since 3 month only and I don't want to be the fastest typer in the world =) Thanks for the link !

So you want a layout without stagger and yet you say that you would prefer two keyboards that have staggered key columns. I'm very confused but at the same time intrigued to learn more.

Maybe it's a vocabulary problem ^^ I'm not a good english speaker. For me non-staggered meant that keys are vertically aligned. What do you call it ?

I really like the planck, but I prefer to have two parts with Enter and Backspace 2u keys in the middle.

Horizontal stagger ;)

Ah ok, I'm not sold on the planck tbh. Great keyboard but not my favorite layout
