This unusual keycap gives impossible instructions!
« on: Fri, 20 May 2016, 13:50:59 »
I found this oddball of a keyboard, out of some ancient industrial machine or other.  I've no idea what it came from, but this one key is impossible.

It says RUB OUT but it's doubleshot.  You literally couldn't rub the legend off the key.

Here's the rest of it, if anyone cares.  The switches are Cherry MX Black, and sadly there is one cap missing - and of course it would be something important (small Shift key).  In a fairly unusual (in my experience) twist, ALL these caps are doubleshot, including the blue ones with diffusers installed for their LEDs.

If anyone recognizes this board, I'd be mildly interested knowing where it came from or what it used to be part of.  It's currently gathering dust; I'm not sure what to do with it and that missing key cap kinda kills my interest :(

harvest the switches and rub one out as you've been commanded to

I like fonts that have a defined zero like that. I cross my sevens but never my zeros so it's odd imo that I like them. Btw "rub out" keys are backspace/delete keys for a time when people would rub out mistakes with a pencil eraser. Well, I can't find information as to why they called that key "rub out" but I'm guessing it has to do pencil eraser symbolism ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Rub out = erase... not something I expect to see on a data terminal but it makes sense, thanks :thumb:

I'm intrigues that the four keys up top have little led shinethroughs. Why don't they do that nowadays?

No one is going to comment on the arrow keys? 2x2 cluster, with the left and right keys the wrong way round. Are you playing with us, OP? :D

If you truly can't find a use for it I'm always looking for vintage keycaps for projects/mods (:

I'm so busy with other stuff, it's still sitting there on top of a pile of other keyboards waiting for attention.  If you want it, the whole thing or just the caps are available.  Shoot me a PM with a dollar number and maybe we add shipping and call it a deal.

The way it is, is the way it was when I found it.  I didn't even notice, TBH.

I got a Rub Out key in my mystery bag a few years back. Put it next to my Adults Only and DONG keys.
